Weird Rash

I like medical threads so I’m just going to throw this one out to you all and get your guesses. A doctor has been seen and the rash is being medicated, but the diagnosis was a bit of a guess.

So, my son has broken out in spots. This all started on Friday. He developed one nickel-sized spot on his leg that, if we lived in the US, I would have thought was poison ivy. It had that sort of rough surface that poison ivy causes. The following morning, he woke up with what looked like mosquito bites, all over his face. Throughout Saturday & Sunday, the “bites” came up on his arms and legs, and two on his back. He did not have a fever and the spots did not itch him. He didn’t act like he noticed them at all - no change in behavior, mood, anything. We thought a mosquito had gotten into his room and just hammered him.

Until…

Some friends of ours came over. Their little boy, 5 days older than ours, had the exact same thing…nickel-sized rough spot followed the next day by little bite-looking things. The boys had last seen each other about 5 days before all this started and that had been a trip to the Sydney Aquarium, so there hadn’t been any romping in the wilderness or anything.

Both boys have had their chicken pox vaccines and neither had a fever or any other discomfort. To answer some of the questions our doctor asked, my son had not been swimming recently, we don’t have birds nesting in our roof, and our dog is on Frontline flea preventative.

The doctor was stumped. He prescribed an antihistamine and, in case it is impetigo (which he wasn’t sure it was, but it was the closest thing he could think of), he prescribed an antibiotic. My son started both yesterday. It seems to be settling down. The older spots have developed pustules and have burst, leaving little scabs. The nickel-sized thing is one big scab. Our friend’s son, whose doctor did not prescribe anything, is also clearing up.

Anyone want to take a shot at this?
