I can only imagine that it is tied up in the historical baggage over taking one’s hat off as a sign of respect and deference. Servants have to remove their hats for their masters, commoners for nobility. Taking one’s hat off indoors is a similar situation of deference and respect. Thus wearing it at the table is a similar offence.
The name seems to imply it is a Buddhist restaurant. If you come to Seoul you could probably find some more places that follow the Buddhist philosophy - it’s become sort of a trend in recent years. I agree that most Korean people aren’t very respectful of vegetarians.
That’s Disney World, with it’s Reedy Creek Improvment District. Disneyland is located in Anaheim, which is a normal municipality.
And RCID is an abnormal municipality.
That’s probably precisely it – directing people to the water fountain suffices to cover them legally, but is enough of a PITA for customers to nudge them toward paying four bucks or whatever for bottled water.
I’ve had this happen a few times, but using a corporate coupon at a franchisee who doesn’t take corporate coupons. Fine, I get it. But the thing is they still want to keep the coupon despite the fact they say they won’t give you the discount and then get mad when you ask them to give the coupon back and sometimes outright refuse to give it back. I assume this has to do with the fact they can send in the coupon for credit to the corporation and this way they’re literally getting money for free?
Also places that don’t allow you to separate out ingredients to put them “on the side” despite the fact you’re still getting the exact same thing just assembled slightly different. I used to ask for “Bacon on the side” on burgers that came with bacon because while I like bacon I really don’t like it on burgers (at least to me the texture gets way different and soggier when allowed to mix with the patty meat) Most places would not allow bacon on the side at all, the bacon had to be in the burger or else it wasn’t coming to me. Same thing with sauces on the side, you either have the sauce on the burger or you can never have it again.
It probably costs more to put stuff on the side, both to have a clean place to lay it on and the few seconds of labor to make sure it is done differently. Although I would think it strange if sit-down places refused to put stuff on the side because they are already giving you a clean plate and arranging your food on it (even if it is a mid-range place that actually reheats their food), so a few more seconds shouldn’t make much of a difference when the result is a happy customer.
this has probably been mentioned but I hate places that give me a small cup for water. Yes, I know drinks like Coke are a big profit item. But I can’t get a normal cup for water?
In the US, if you order water you usually get a glass of tap water. In the Caribbean, order water and you are asked if you want that carbonated or still (flat). Then you are offered several brands and you pick what you want. You get the entire bottle and are charged a buck or so.
I thought fast food places were being referred to. If you order water there (where the soda dispenser is not behind the counter), they often give you a child-size cup.
Ahhhhhh.
The explanation I’ve heard for the odd cups for water was that the stores are tracking soda sales by the number of cups that were dispensed, rather than the specific amount of soda or syrup that’s used. So they’d have to charge as much for water as they do for soda if they gave you a regular cup. Also, it’s really obvious that way if you fill the cup with soda anyhow.
Not policy, just silliness.
A few years ago the wife ordered the stuffed mushroom cap appetizer at a restaurant – the kind of mushrooms that have a large cap. It cost around $10, she was going to get a side salad and call it dinner.
The mushroom dish arrived and it was “A” mushroom – as in one, and not a particular large one. We pointed out that the menu was kind of shady, as most diners would assume a $10 dish contains multiple caps unless there’s a defining article (“A”) or the number of pieces listed (“One”). Our server had difficulty understanding what we meant, but did bring out two more caps.
This makes sense, because so much soda is poured out because it overflows, or has too big a “head” on it, or they got the wrong kind, or any number of other reasons. And it’s a profit-maker because the soda mix is cheap.
(bolding mine)
UH, tough shit? Unless the hat is covered in swearwords or some sort of offensive logo, grow some thicker skin and mind your own business. My plain black ball cap isn’t offensive unless you’re a nutcase lunatic.
Has anyone been to a restaurant that served brains?
even worse are the places that give you a cup size for which there is no lid!
Heh, but yes. We took my kids out for dinner and calf brains was on the specials board. My kids freaked out a bit. My gf ordered brains just to mess with them. Turns out another diner had ordered the last one. “86 Brains!”
Maybe not “offensive”, but definitely poor manners.
Fuck that noise.
Manners are about how you interact with other people. What you choose to wear when you’re minding your own business, particularly something as ordinary as a cap, has nothing to do with manners.
It’s bad manners to police other people’s personal choices, like choosing to wear an ordinary cap.
