The 30-day guest privilege is a free trial period for new people … the guy who happened to run into the expression “pan-fried semen,”’ started researching where it came from, and happened on the SDMB, signed up and is trying it out. Standard board policy is that if you were a member before the pay-to-post policy went into effect, you’ve had your trial period already – you know what the place is like; pay up or take a hike. I’m not sure it’s the wisest move, but it is Reader policy.

Seriously, how do we know it was the original Gazoo and not some asshat sullying his good name? There’s one way to know for sure, have him sign in under his original name. I don’t see how this is rude at all.
It takes no commitment to lurk on the boards to see who’s still hanging around. It’s pretty easy to check the FAQ and figure things out here, especially if you’ve spent a few years here in the past.

He was saying that other poseters were advising you to contact the Mods about the fact you were using a different name than the one you initially signed on with. I agree with the OP that Skip’s response was abrupt to the point of rudeness. He was admittedly enforcing the rules but the “one trial only” rule was a lot less clear back in 2004 and Gazoo was probably unaware of it (he certainly didn’t act as if he thought he was breaking any rule). But, if nothing else, it was a quick demonstration of what this board is about.

I’ve let my subscription lapse more than once. You can still log in with your old name and password; you just can’t post or search. But the subscribe function is available with the name you already established. If you don’t know your password, I’m sure there’s a mechanism for getting it reset.
I’m sorry, but I am sure people would be jumping all over Skip for NOT banning/closing, if he hadn’t. Mods can’t win around here. The rules are the rules, and even if they’re not always evenly enforced, I think Skip did the right thing here.

Over all not too rude at all. He probably should have included a contact Email to take care of the problem as the odds are Gazoo will have no clue what his password was and may not have his original Email account used to sign up as Gazoo.
Perhaps someone has Emailed GazooII in the meantime with information to clear up this minor problem.
I see **Skip ** doing nothing more than enforcing a rule. I also think AndyPolley makes a good point, that it is possible for someone to troll the board by claiming to be “some poster from the past”.

I have more than one inaccessible login, on other sites, which were based on an old email address. Hence I cannot ask for them to send me my old password, and when I try to register and log in using my new address, it apparently recognizes my IP and refuses to okay the new registration. Likely something similar happened to Gazoo here, so I think he is deserving of some slack.

He is being given a chance. Usually when someone is found with two accounts, both are banned. This time, only the second account was banned with a request to use the original account.
People simply don’t get two accounts here. That’s how it is.
