Hello everyone. I was concerned about introducing myself in a forum with the word mundane in it, but alas…
…and before you ask, I know not the meaning of life, nor do I have a shred of artistic ability, so I leave it to you to figure out the meaning of my name.
I am almost 30 years old.
I am a male.
I am married.
My favorite forum is the Pit.
I have a sometimes extremely boring job that allows me to read not only everything posted at the Straight Dope, but everything posted on the entire internet.
I first found this place about a year ago, but only in the past month or so have I been an active lurker. I wanted to make a comment in a thread, so I finally signed up today.
Don’t count on me for any ground breaking threads, but mostly for a few wiseass comments, and a few additions to a current discussion here and there.
I’ve always wondered why people lurk so much before they post. I know we’re supposed to lurk as a sort of courtesy rule, but since when do [lots of] people follow rules?
Almost every new post I see has the poster announcing their dutiful lurking beforehand. Surely if one is a decent enough human being they don’t need to lurk much, if at all in order to post within rules of courtesy.
I think people lurk to get a feel for a community they have stumbled upon. Usually it takes a little bit of lurkage before you decide it is a community you want to participate in, and take the effort (I know, what an effort!) to sign up a user name.
::Hands LifeIllustrator a welcome basket filled with blueberry muffins, 2 rolls of orange life-savers and a gift certificate for a Hickory Farms Beefstick::
I have no pride, just a murderous rage that is only lessened by bacon butties, Gypsy lovin’, talking 'bout wolverines and playing with my Speak and Spell.
Now, just give me those packets of life-savers and you can be on your way.
That’s our website, hosted by my friend CB. I’m the one with red hair and bangs. We like to party a lot, which is pretty obvious once you look at the pics.
In my experience, on the SDMB (or anywhere probably) you only have to lurk for a day (spend the day reading the posts) to figure out weither it is a worthwhile community or not.
Don’t get me wrong LifeIllustrator - this is not a dig at you. People probalby enjoy reading only. And I have nothing against the act of lurking. It just surprises me how many people seem to do it, and how long they do it for.
