Jihadi John was a coward. There are no reports that he was anything other than a sadistic jailer who guarded Western hostages. He tortured and murdered bound and unarmed prisoners. It’s difficult to see how anyone could considered that to be a “fight to the death”.

The problem is who decides who dies, and how many other people in the vicinity it’s cool to also kill.
At that moment it’s unaccountable, unidentified, likely unqualified people saying … we think it might be this guy.
We all know stories of how people apparently killed by drone have popped up again - no one says ‘well, who did we kill that last time?’. No one is accountable for those killings, for any drone, missile, bombing relating to alleged targeted killings.
But isnt that true if modern warfare in general? How many innocents died in the bombing of Hamburg or Tokyo or London or Warsaw? If the choice is simply a binary yes or no I would vote yes. And obviously intelligence a d operational details cant be made public. We have no choice but to trust our leaders.
I’m not up on the accuracy of the drone that was used but if it was firing non-explosive rounds, it’s a least a possibility.
And yay, they hit the right half: the wonders of modern technology!
Kind of makes you wonder how they take out large chunks of hospitals.
War isn’t a judicial proceeding. When you confront the enemy on the battlefield, you don’t read them their rights and ask a jury to decide if you shoot shoot at them.

If you just give up on legal process you end up with, at the very best, Guantanamo, which demeans all of us and what we seriously stand for. It’s really, really hard but I think we do need to be aware this is not a good option.
The problem being that he will probably be congratulated upon becoming a martyr.
But what are the other options? Inaction isnt a very good option.
What did we do before drones?
Yes, I think some collateral damage is a risk you run with war. In this instance, it sounds like reasonable efforts were made to minimize them.
To be clear, I’m good with this kill on the facts now in evidence. Masks won’t protect you. Maybe the next piece of vaporized meat in waiting will think a minute or two before being sadistic with hostages for no good purpose.
