Government should be more reluctant to get involved when there is no apparent private sector economic case to be made.
But this is all about Quebec electioneering. It is barely meant to have the air of reality. Not like Ford’s tunnel of love.

Tell me what defensive alliance Canada has that would prevent an American invasion.
NATO is not a correct answer.
Maybe the one currently under discussion with the EU. It hasn’t been in the news because very little information has been released about it. Our strongest partners would likely be Britain and France.
Obviously I was referring to his wartime leadership.
Including this one ?
And, at a time when Trump, Musk, Putin, and their populist stooges are controlling more and more of the world, we need a wartime footing to prepare ourselves for the battles ahead, such as acquiring fighter jets and submarines, and not a commuter train to Quebec City.
Why is transportation a provincial issue out west, and a federal issue in central Canada ?
The feds have a significant role in transportation policies and funding.
Transport Canada is responsible for transportation policies and programs. We promote safe, secure, efficient and environmentally responsible transportation.
Even a stopped clock is right twice a day!
It’s not, that’s why GO Transit is a provincial agency that manages transit across the Golden Horseshoe area. Alberta doesn’t have an equivalent because either the government doesn’t want to or it’s not economically feasible given distances and density.
The Toronto/QC Corridor is interprovincial, by necessity there is federal involvement. With any major infrastructure projects like this, there is always some degree of funding from the province, the Feds, and often the municipality for local projects. I’m sure if someone proposed a Regina-Moosejaw-Lethbridge-Calgary route, it would need Federal buy in.
With the upcoming debates this Mon. and Tue, curious what folks’ thoughts are viz. Freeland vs. Carney.
So the federal government only spends billions of dollars on transportation in high population density areas? In other words, only in Ontario and Quebec?
Is there a feasible Alberta based public transportation scheme the Federal government is ignoring? I need to understand your point outside of NIYBYism (not in YOUR backyard)
ETA: Also, ftr I would love to support public transportation in YOUR backyard. But you need to help me out here.
@Northern_Piper I think you are focusing in on certain things. As I have pointed out, regional transportation is spearheaded by a provincial transit authority. Why doesn’t Alberta? Where do you think our 8% Provincial portion of the HST goes when Alberta has decided they don’t want that tax revenue?
And yes, government can and should use cost/benefit analysis to decide where to spend tax dollars. Subsidies on bus transit may be better in some areas vs. high speed rail in others.
In large population centers like Toronto, public transit is quite properly funded by all three levels of government. Metrolinx, which operates the GO Transit train and bus commuter service and the Union station to Pearson airport express train, is mostly subsidized by the province, in the amount of nearly $1 billion annually.
The EU has no ability to defend Canada against American invasion without resorting to French nuclear weapons, which they would not do.
Chantal Kreviazuk changes the words of “O Canada” when she sang the National Anthem at the 4 Nations Final. Changing the words from ‘true patriot love in all of us command’ to ‘true patriot love that NONE BUT US command.’
I think we should keep that change.
And Connor McDavid with a final statement,
The many Trumpists who crowed about the win in the preliminary round will now be very quiet.
It seems having Trump support your sports team is the kiss of death. Just ask Team USA, and just ask the Kansas City Chiefs. LOL
Well, I guess some winning team won’t be invited to the White House. Don’t sweat it, guys, you’d probably only get Big Macs, fries, and Cokes anyway.
