Welcome to the Canadoper Café, 2025!

The purpose of the tax is to adapt the Canadian federal tax system to the new digital service world, which by its nature is different from bricks and mortar companies.

If a company is doing business in Canada, it’s expected to pay taxes in Canada. Normally, that’s done by the income tax, which applies to all businesses located in Canada, including foreign companies which operate in Canada either directly or through Canadian subsidiaries.

But the digital companies are different. They can do business in Canada without a physical presence in Canada, and without incorporating in Canada. The normal income tax therefore doesn’t apply to them.

The DST will impose a tax on their sales in Canada, without any need for them to be in Canada.

The tax applies to all digital sales, in theory without targeting any country. However, since the big digital companies are all American, the American government has argued that it’s a tax aimed at US companies. The US opposition to the DST predates Trump.

It was enacted in 2022, with a coming into force date in 2025, but backdated somehow. That means there will be an immediate large tax bill for the US digital companies. I don’t know why it’s structured that way.

Some other countries have similar taxes.

CBC has a good article on it:

Never mind - Carney chickened out.

Seriously, is no one going to stand up to Trump?!? We’re all fucked…

Here’s the Globe article including the list of Order of Canada recipients for 2025 -

In the future you might want to spell out DST especially when related to US involvement. Otherwise DST is more likely assumed to be Daylight Saving Time, a much more common TLA.

Granted, I am even more opposed to Daylight Saving Time, so we agree there, “down with DST!!”.

In Canada, we’re thoroughly accustomed to PST, GST, and HST that I never thought for a second that DST could stand for anything other than ‘Digital Sales Tax’.

Shipyards in BC didn’t even bother to bid. They’re already at capacity building vessels for the Navy and the Coast Guard and they don’t seem particularly interested in building ferries.

My understanding is that the Chinese bid came in at about a billion dollars less than the second-place bid. I know that’s a meaningless number to a government but a billion here and a billion there and pretty soon you’re talking real money. The ferries being built in China is a nice illustration of how Canada needs more of everything and all of it is expensive if you want it done domestically.

Happy Canada Day, everyone! Got any plans?

I was planning to sing Gordon Lightfoot’s “Canadian Railroad Trilogy” at two different open mics here in NYC. I just woke up feeling like taking a Covid test might be a better idea…

Happy Canada Day! :canada:

Thinking about taking the day to drive the Fundy Trail Parkway to enjoy the ocean. Most likely rewarding myself with New Brunswick’s best lobster roll at the end of the trail. Seems to be a quintessentially Canadian day.

It’s going to be a hot and humid day here in Toronto. We were going to head down to https://www.waterworksfoodhall.com/ and eat in the park, but it looks likes it’s closed today. Back to looking for a plan!

Turning 61 today, this gardener’ll just put in another (hot) workday.

Yep, it’s fucking Covid all right!

Well, that sucks. Hope you are feeling better soon.

Here in suburbia, I’ll watch the parade - which is sure to have the usual water-gun fights between the kids on the floats and the spectators.

It ends at the park, where I will make my way past the Irish dancers, the face painters, the bouncy castles, and the beer tent, on my way to the BBQ with hotdogs and hamburgers.

We might mosey down to Mel Lastman Square and watch the fireworks.

My mother and her friends are heading there. If you see a gang of octogenarians, it’s probably them.

Unless they’re 8 feet tall, I probably won’t see them in the crowd!

Happening in the US too, but it’s crept up here…

ETA - ??? - when I clicked on the link, it showed the full story, but now when I click on it, the story can’t be viewed. (Used up all the free viewings?)

Yeah, it was locked behind a paywall for me. Just as well - there’s only one story I want to read about Andrew Tate, and that wasn’t it. One day…

It makes me very sad to hear that a flawed human like Tate has any influence on anyone - you want a definition of ‘toxic masculinity’, he’s it. And when I begin to consider the long list of women I have worked with - teachers, coaches, mentors, conductors, pianists, directors, and producers - I just shake my head at the opportunities I would have lost out on if I’d been stupid enough to listen to a piece of shit like him.

I think we can all agree that Swiss Chalet is a nice, inoffensive BBQ chicken and rib restaurant. But what really makes it stand out is the sauce. I’ve had the mix-it-up-yourself packets, but while they’re close, they’re just not quite it.

But I ran across this recipe, which claims to be as close as you can get to it, made from scratch. I’m no chef or cook of any sort, but it looks easy enough. Maybe our friends who are more experienced with cooking would like to try it:

These, ‘won’t respect/behave for female teachers’, bunch should be rescheduled classes so they ONLY have female teachers. Every. Single. Class.

They want to make a point? Go for it! It will cost you being held back a year, (two if you’re a slow learner!) Let’s see how that affects your grade point average/college admission chances.

If this was my child, he would be seeing only a female teacher till middle school!
