Welcome to the Canadoper Café, 2025!

No, it is not embarrassing. It is fascinating. As an Albertan, I hope that many Albertan MAGA-wannabes see just how much Poilievre and his Trumpist policies are not popular here. That starts with 200+ independents, and seven parties. As I said, he may win, but I am sure that he will not win the popular vote.

Elections Canada has decided to use a write in ballot for election day, just as they would for the advanced and mail in balloting.

It amazes me how people can watch the same thing and have completely different takes on it. The reporter was asked who was saying that Pierre was far right, etc, You can be a conservative and not be a MAGAt.

What should he have said to the reporter that would have been acceptable? How do you answer when someone asks you if you have stopped beating your wife?

How will the news of Trudeau possibly dating Katy Perry affect Poilievre’s campaign? I hope Ezra Levant will weigh in on this momentous story.

Like Trudeau senior, being a mede=ia darling always causes stress in politics and personal relations with family.

I’m quite certain he is happy to be out of politics.

FWIW, each of these is owned by Recipes Unlimited, formerly known Cara, along with several other chains.

Yes, it IS embarrassing to watch a grown man, of much political experience, calling names like a child in a schoolyard. A play directLy from the Maga playbook. Sure, not ALL conservatives…but def this one!

There was a time, not long ago, when our politicians were overly polite, “my distinguished colleague from…”, followed by some political shot or dig. Just as cutting, less juvenile. A certain respect for the position if not the individual.

That was before Trump lowered the discourse, for political gain. It worked south of the border, why not try it here? And who’s doing it? Trump wanna be PP.

You’d be a titch blind not to see it, in my opinion.

Well there is no doubt in my mind that he’ll win it. It’s the most safest seat in the country, Poilievre chose it for that reason. I see no reason why it should even be in question. He’ll walk away with this one, I’m very confident he’ll get the popular vote too.

His leadership is more dodgy, but I’m certain he’ll win it comfortably too (notice that Jenni Byrne is still working unscathed, so this shows how weak/silent his opponents are).

Some of PPs policies live on in the agenda announced by Carney. While I think anyone will have trouble dealing with the mercurial Trump, and Carney is the best option, the Libs were fairly slick at stealing ideas better than what they had long been selling.

I see they are just asking people to write the name, rather than a beach towel ballot. I think this performance silly. There should be a generous limit to how many independents can run IMHO.

Well that takes some of the fun out of it. What they need is a candidate whose name is ALMOST IDENTICAL to Pierre Poilievre to run. A Pedro Pointever or some such. Is there still time?

If you gave me three tries, I’m pretty sure I couldn’t spell that correctly when writing by hand. Anyone want to take bets on how many ballots will be spoiled because of this? Will they be posting a prominent list of every candidate, so people know how to spell their names?

You can see why PP was a good alternative and PeePee the pjorative one.

The local riding debate. Notice that PP has no problem participating (unlike the dead silence imposed on all Tory candidates forbidding them from participating in debates or interviews). This man has NOTHING to fear from.

The 1973 Quebec provincial election had two other Levesques running against Rene. A few voting errors possibly caused Rene to lose the seat. Results of October 29, 1973 general election – Dorion – Élections Québec

The CBC link posted upthread notes that the spelling doesn’t have to be perfect, just close enough for Elections Canada to know what you mean.

Hilary Weston, former LG of Ontario and mother of Loblaw and Shoppers Drug Mart head Galen Weston has died at 83.

Has he dropped the Jr.? Or is this a Canadian version of “I’m My Own Grandpa”?

I’m not even sure why he’s a junior. His full name is Willard Galen Garfield Weston, and his dad was not named Willard.

He has two movies about intelligent animals in his name? I did not know that.

Any dopers in St John’s or Halifax? Wildfires are within spitting distance of both cities, although the one in St John’s seems to be a bigger concern. Weird to see that my old apartment in Paradise (outside St John’s) probably would have been in the evacuation zone.

No fires yet here on PEI, but the fire risk is extreme and there may be thunderstorms coming through tomorrow. The forests right now are incredibly dry - we’ve received 54 mm of rain in the last two months, less than a third of the average. A large number of spruce are dying, leaving behind very flammable needles. Even the sphagnum in the bogs is drying out.
