Welcoming His4ever, Our First Actual "Chick" Chick!

I noticed in another thread on religion that His4ever is a follower of the, ummm, well-known Jack Chick. I thought that was worthy of a thread of its own, as Mr. Chick has been so widely discussed here. I do not want this turn turn into a thread mindlessly bashing either His4ever or Jack Chick! But for the first time, we have someone who can discuss Chick tracts from the “other side,” and I hoped this might be interesting.

Welcome to the SDMB, His4ever, I think you’ll find some friends here, even if we do disagree on certain topics.

Gosh, you reminded me that the other night I actually had a dream during which I was handed 4 Chick tracts. I collect them IRL. I recall that of the 4 I was handed 2 were duplicates of ones i already had, so I tossed them. But I was really excited about the 2 new ones. Wierd (both the dream and the dreamer).

Sorry to report that I was dreaming about something other than you, Eve luv.

Oh, and welcome to the boards, His4ever. A coupe of questions, should you see fit to join in here.

Those Chick tracts always strike me as rather expensive. Wondering what justifies the cost as opposed to alternative outreach options?

Also, do CTs aim at a particular target audience? Any ideas as to their effectiveness?

Certain elements of some of them strike me as - well - mean. Such as Where’s Rabbi Waxman and Allah Had No Son Do fans of CT feel differently, or are they not bothered by this impression/tone?

I must say, I didn’t think the Jack Chick thing was for real. I guess I’m mistaken! :smack: I’d like to hear more about the Jack Chick experience, His4ever. Tell us what you think of this comic book approach to witnessing, why you prefer this technique over others.

Do “Chick Chicks” eat Tic Tacs?

Woah, this should be interesting… I hope His4ever doesn’t take the ribbing we give the tracts too seriously.

However that reminds me that a thread we had should be picked up again as new tracts have been released.

I am also curious as to whether the tracts are to be believed completely or not.

The end of Chick’s Payback! completely mystifies me. The main character, a nurse, tricks a dying old man into leaving his fortune to her instead of relatives (she probably kills him, too, but this is unclear).

When the nurse herself dies 7 years later (of cancer, go figure) part of her deathbed redemption is arranging her will to give the money back to the relatives. The last two panels play out:

Lawyer: Kelli James is dead!
Relative 1: Good!
Relative 2: We’ll always hate her guts for what she did to us! That witch!

Lawyer: She tripled your father’s fortune [evidently the wicked know how to play the stock market] and left it all to you folks.
R3: Huh! What? But you know, I always liked her.
R4: I agree.
R1: Me, too. She had a good heart.
R2: I’ll never forgive her!

Chick then quotes Mark 11:26 and implies R2, by not forgiving Kelli, will himself not be forgiven. Huh? What about the fickle greedy slobs who flip-flopped as soon as they found out they were getting the dough? Isn’t there a bible passage about that somewhere?

Clearly, not one of Jack’s better performances.

Why is this in Great Debates?

What are we debating? “Whether Chick Tracts are F.O.S. or not?”

Either you like 'em, or you don’t. Where’s the debate?

The debate, I guess, will be whether or not the theological ideas put forth by Chick tracts are correct or not. I suppose these hypothetical debates will be based on whether or not they are correct interpretations of the Bible, which I presume is Chick’s source material.

I’ve never been a big fan of Chick Tracts (although I occasionally enjoy a good laugh at the expense of Dark Dungeons), but I must say that some Chick tracts are definitely less, um, “Chick-like” than others.

F’rinstance, in Love the Jewish People, ol’ Hellfire Jack actually seems to be preaching a message of tolerance and non-judgementalism. This is so strongly at odds with his other tracts’ attitudes toward Catholics, Muslims, and homosexuals that I sometimes wonder if Jack Chick even wrote it.

All religious discussions go in “Great Debates.” I just hope His4ever will drop by . . .

I don’t think Chick tracts are theologically correct. I’ve played roleplaying games off-and-on for over a decade now, and I STILL haven’t been invited to join a Satanic coven and learn Black Magic.

Yeah, if only that girl’s thief had made her saving throw on that poison trap. She was a level 8 thief for cryin’ out loud, what a crappy character build she must have had to tank out on that roll. She deserved to get booted from that game. Oh well. And why does the cleric learn mind control spells??

Anyway, I don’t think Jack Chick has much of a theology. He just accuses any religion other than evangelical protestantism of Baal-worship and says “case closed”, tacking on the same 8-9 Bible passages at the end. If there’s a “Christian” afterlife, I hope his punishment in hell is to have the Pope dump copies of “Death Cookie” on his head from up in heaven, ones with really sharp corners and stuff.

As to the OP, yeah it would be interesting to see how people who follow the “message” of those tracts address those issues. I have seen some stuff on websites about Chick from people who use them, but they take them with a grain of salt and a touch of amusement. I’ve never heard from someone who is a devotee of their serious side, other than the few relatively non-offensive tracts (although pretty much every tract is anti-Catholic, sometimes it’s just disguised better.)

Well I prefer these tracts over the ones with just words because it seems more likely that someone might read the Chick tracts for who doesn’t like comic books? And in reading them they get the gospel message. I like leaving tracts around because God can use them and plus as I said in another post, I’m not the type of person who can knock on doors and go up to people and ask them if they know Christ. If it comes up in a conversation, it’s easier to jump in and talk about. Christians are supposed to share the gospel and this is one way to do it. Of course, most people here aren’t going to agree with me as to what the gospel is plust I know some of you make fun of Chick tracts.

Hey, you can’t be all nice about this!!! You gotta tell us we are all gonna burn for not reading Chick Tracts!!! Where is the fun in you being nice?

ARG220 was our first admitted agree-er with Jack Chick.

Remember: handing someone a religious tract is the universal equivalent of saying “Hi! Would you please throw this out for me?”

I’d be lying if I said that. The only reason anyone is going to burn, as you call it, is if they never accept Jesus as their Saviour believing His shed blood pays for our sins. John 3:36~~He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him. Of course, there’s no use quoting the Bible if you don’t accept it as God’s word. I do believe it’s God’s word. Can I explain all of it or do I understand every single thing? No, but I believe it’s pretty clear on the plan of salvation. Of course, from all the people I’ve come in contact with on other boards, I usually get blasted for this stand. And get asked all kinds of questions I don’t know how to answer. I’m lousy at debating. I know what I believe, though, and that won’t change even if I don’t yet know how to rightly defend the faith.

Sure, but in this case, that would include the catholics, for instance. And as already pointed out, these tracts are extremely antu-catholic. So, how do you reconcile distributing these anti-catholics tracts and believing that everybody who accept Jesus as his savior is going to be saved?

His4Ever, but, Jack Chick commits a grave sin-that of bearing FALSE WITNESS, which goes against the Ten Commandments.

His filthy lies about Catholicism are laughable at best and downright gravely offensive at worst.

How do you feel about that?

Although, the dog belching after eating Jezebel was pretty cool.

And Kelly James WAS a bitch-I mean, she wouldn’t let the guy’s family see him when he was dying.

But I’ll bet they only wanted to convince him to leave all the money to THEM. So they all suck.
