The story’s been sanitized a bit from what I first read a few days ago.
This story says “unprovoked attack” by a “gang”.
The original news version that I remember was "someone wished the Jewish guys ‘Merry Christmas,’ and when one Jew replied, ‘Happy Hannukah,’ the alleged Christians took offense and attacked. It’s speculation, but maybe they thought he was dissing Christmas.

But we’ve now sanitized out any suggestion that hotheaded “War on Christmas” Christian fundamentalist types might have been responsible, and now we can feel safely that “gangs” (a problem we already admit having) were the problem.
None of this takes away from the heroism or humanity of Mr. Askari. Here’s to him!
