Well, I'm going to Minot! Any must sees while I'm there?

I’m going to be attending the ND state fair with mom and dad for a few days at the end of this month - apart from that, are there any must sees while we’re there?

Mom and I would be interested in outlet mall shopping (or any other good shopping for that matter), dad is sort of activities oriented so museums and things are a good bet.

I noticed they have a Zoo, which might be worth checking out.

So - does anyone have any suggestions? I want to make the most of my trip!

alice, dear: I was stationed there in the early 70s on the SAC base, and I have to tell you that there wasn’t anything to see then except trees and that probably hasn’t changed a lot.

Quasi

The City Council had a slogan (They may still have it): Why Not Minot?

Me and my Flight could’ve given them a hundred reasons why not!

I don’t think the SAC base is there anymore, but the townies sure hated us (to the point where we all bought long-hair wigs when we went to hear a concert…)

Sorry! No good memories of Minot.

Q

BAH!

Surely there must be some fun stuff in Minot?

My uncle was at the SAC base about the same time you were, Quasi. I wonder if you knew him. (For that matter, maybe you are my uncle.)

To hear him talk about it, there’s not a whole lot to recommend the place. At least you’ll be there in the summer, so probably less chance of frostbite.

Isn’t there a Doper there? Tripler maybe?

Um, this is not nearly as helpful as I was hoping…

I seem to recall Tripler is in Minot; perhaps he’ll be along shortly.

Come See Our Beautiful Mooses… Meese… Meese…es… ah, hell… come wonder at our fabumous aminals!

I believe that the plural of Moose, is “Moose.”

There are actually moose here. I was kinda hoping for a more local attraction. You know - like a giant perogie.

Tripler is there. That’s all the fun you need.

alice, you are pretty much out of luck. The fair is the big event.

According to my husband, who was stationed there 4 years, 1 month, 23 days, 12 hours and 15 minutes (not that he was counting  ), the only good thing to see in Minot is the “Welcome to Minot” sign in your rear-view mirror as you drive out of town.

And the Peace Garden on the Canadian border.

Sorry, can’t be more help, he’s wandering around the house now, mumbling something about spending a year of his life trapped in a missile silo.

The University of Southern North Dakota at Hoople (USNDAH) must be near there somewhere…

Well. I guess I’ll check out the zoo and the shopping then.

I kinda hoped there was a big nickle or something. :frowning:

Hoople? That’s not a real name. It cannot be.

Hey, did anyone mention that Tripler lives there?

I seem to recall that Tripler was transferred from there recently and is in the process of relocating.

The Peace Gardens are near Bottineau.

The geographic center of North America is near Harvey.

Hoople is a real town.

The fair is a big draw and is sure to feature great people watching. You’ll be able to pick the basers out of the crowd with no trouble whatsoever.

Oh, and since Minot is in the NW corner of ND, I’m just guessing that Hoople is somewhere near Valley City and Jamestown (South-Central ND).
