Nothing wrong with lizards, they’ll eat some bugs and probably die from dehydration or cat in a few days. The only real problem is if they run across your face while your sleeping. I usually try to catch them and release them outside before the cats get them. I recently have seen two lizards in my house, I caught and released one, the other one was tiny and escaped.
Handling reptiles doesn’t bother me, I just worry that I’ll hurt them or their tail will fall off. They do bite sometimes but they don’t have teeth so it’s more of a pinch. I once freaked out my boyfriend when I caught one and took it outside. He couldn’t believe I was handling it (even though I work with animals). He went outside with me and I felt the lizard in my hand clamp onto my skin. It didn’t hurt so I didn’t react but I started telling him how lizards aren’t poisonous, “well, except for this one variety.” Then I peeked into my hand, “come to think of it the poisonous one looks a little like this”, then I opened my hand and the lizard was dangling from my skin. So, I started screaming and then acted like I was going to faint. I had him going for a minute but then I started laughing.
Anyway, you might want to check for loose window screens or weatherstripping around the doors to figure out how they’re getting in and fix the problem. Inthe cases of the recent lizards in my house, one was near a window with a loose screen and the other was near a door.
There’s two places they are coming from, one i can fix and one I can’t. I don’t like the thought of them being in my house even though I’m terrified of them. All three times my husband was able to catch them and set them free, but if I was home by myself, there’s just no way. I’d probably get some tupperware and cover it and take it outside like that. ugh. Help…heellllp.
If they were chameleons you could possibly make them leave by covering your walls and floors with plaid, it would drive them crazy trying to blend in. Other than blocking their entrances, there’s not much else I could suggest. The cat might protect you if it finds the lizard interesting enough.
Odd, the only time I ever got invaded, on a regular basis, by wildlife was while I was living in NYC area. I had a 'possum come into my apartment, and two feral cats…
Lizards rock! How could you NOT want lizards in your house? In summer in Japan, we used to get loads of cool little geckoes scuttling all over the walls and ceiling - they used to hang out in the bathroom, where it wasn’t so hot and they could eat all the bugs and drink out of the bath. I could watch them for hours. I miss those guys - them and the bats.
About a week ago my wife was cleaning the apartment and way in the back of a closet she found a lizard, it was black, about and inch long, and dehydrated. Not thirsty dehydrated, raisin dehydrated. Oh, and we’re in Wisconsin. The only lizards in this house are the two I bought (beardies if you must know). In Wisconsin there aren’t exactly wild lizards running around, much less finding there way into your house. The only thing I can think of is that one of the neigbors owned it and it somehow made it into our house.
I’ve never had a lizard in my house but I have em on my back porch. Cool little critters! I love watchin’ em stalk some lizardy gourmet delight then pounce on it. Anything that eats mosquitoes is ok by me. Same way with the dragonflies.
Ya got to understand I’m from New Jersey. In my particular area, there weren’t any lizards. Hell the only frog I ever saw was in the biology lab about to be cut up! Nature’s just not for me. Here in AR, the bugs, lizards etc are abundant.
Preferably, I’d have none in the house! Just the animals I wanted, please This is why I love fall down here, all the creepy crawlies go away.
Oh and sorry, no picture to show, the lizards are gone from the house, and I have no camera
I applaud you, Shibboleth, for making the required first reply. However, lest you delebrate too much, I must note it took the SDMB 44 minutes to come up with that response.
I can’t really identify with you at all here. If I were to see a lizard loose in my house, I’d freak out, sure, but that would be because I’d wonder how she got out of her cage and worry that one of the cats might have hurt her.
Anyway, I bet my lizard* is bigger than your lizards.
*Not my actual lizard, but she looks just like that.
