I spent all day knocking on doors for a political campaign. When I got home my legs were pollen-yellow to the knee and I’d sweat through my shirt not just under my arms but everywhere it touched me. God, it was gross. 93, evidently. And the election’s tomorrow. So I’ll be doing the same thing outside the polls. Urrrrgh.
Was driving down from San Diego last night, and …crap, another tremor…ok cats are sleeping through this one at least, they’ve been skittish since yesterday…ok over…
Anyway, I kept gawking at all the hills thinking ‘omg this is so pretty!’ and realized why: it was the first time I’d seen anything GREEN in the area, as I only moved here about a year ago.
I really really really REALLY miss lilacs, though.
When does the pollen end?
Feels like spring this morning here in London too - the sun is shining and it might reach 60F for the first time since probably last October. It’s been a long cold winter and I’m ready for some WARMTH!
What he said. Wish I were there to enjoy it.
Whenever the oaks are done making out with the world. Until then, we’re all living in a fog of oak jizz.
And ABOUT TIME TOO!.. This winter seemed to go on for years and years.
The temperature of the lake here is also rising quickly… two weeks ago, it was 58-60, as of yesterday it was 70-73. I actually got in and swam around a bit.
Also, as of yesterday, it seems that the pines have finished their pollen explosion. I didn’t see any out on the water or blowing off of the trees. We are supposed to get some thunderstorms on Thursday, that will hopefully settle out the rest of the tree pollen.
I’ve been trying to clean up my house, yard, and lake-toys the past couple of weeks, before it gets too nice, and I leave those projects for next year. Looks like I’m a runnin’ outta time!
I find it a little disconcerting that the trees are trying to have sex with me a little but mostly missing. My car, on the other hand, is hump city.
Ugh… This past week, especially Fri/Sat/Sun were horrible for the pollen. Trying to clean up the boats and ski, and all weekend long I had yellow scum flowing into the cove and absolutely covering the water. I only did the hulls, and decided to hold off on cleaning the interiors (and the porch, and the deck, and the dock) until the pines have finished their orgy.
It’s almost spring up here - it’s definitely close. The trees are starting to bud out, so they look all spiky and cool. And I saw my neighbor’s got her daffodils starting to poke through. I love daffodils. And it’s generally outstanding.
However, I’m not loving the 45 and rainy today, though.
Hee hee - we’ll have lilacs soon. It’s the north’s way of evening things out - you get all that great amazing stuff that barely grows up here even in summer, we get lilacs. Neener.
Seriously. I was driving to work today (also in Charlotte) and I could* see* the pollen being kicked up off the road by the other cars.
Three years here and I’m still adjusting to going outside in the spring and finding everything coated with yellow-green dust. I have no idea why I never noticed this in Chicago. I also didn’t have the occasional sinus problems there that I have here, although the doctor told me that’s because I’m now being exposed to different allergens than the ones I grew up with, and over time I might adjust to them.
My crocuses are over, my daffodils are open, as well as hyacinths and violets. We had our first big thunderstorm last night, it was massive! Rain all day today, but that’s a blessing here right now, since we’re having another arson epidemic. (Flint MI - we just laid off a big chunk of our police and firefighters so the firebugs have all come out to play). So anyway, tulips, peonies, lilies, silver dollars, I can’t wait. We also have some gorgeous crabapple trees that are just budding, and my tiny redbud isn’t open yet either. I really need to get some lilac bushes.
Speaking as a fellow grad student with a newborn baby keeping me up every night, um, well, I wish the weather was that nice here? I’ve got nothing.
Oh right! Congrats, Smeg! Our reproductive efforts have been eerily similar. As I recall, last year, you were kvetching about sex having become a chore, since you were trying to get pregnant, right? I remember laughing about that, as my wife and I were going through the same thing. Boy, we didn’t know from “chore”, huh?
Boy or girl? When was the delivery? How’s it going?
Girl, born Jan 31, and I’m posting this as I’m anxiously awaiting to see if she’s going to sleep or whine all night again, if that gives any indication. Oh, good. She’s whining.
I sympathize. The boy has slept about 2 hours today, and is so exhausted he can’t stand it, but he just will. not. sleep.
