Well, DDG and jarbabyj are both posters I do not shy away from reading. But you can’t please everybody. Obviously, one has been letting resentment build up, the other feels blind-sided, and supporters and detractors of each have let loose with ill-considered broadsides. Towards the end of the 400 car pileup that came previously, someone mentioned something along the lines of: everybody doesn’t HAVE to like everybody else. And, y’know, that’s it in a nutshell. I hope to continue to read both of you.

DDG , I rarely read your posts, I rarely post myself, but I’ve been around for quite a while. I had no preconcieved notions about you going into Jar’s thread. So here’s what I came out of that thread knowing about you:

You answer many General Questions with information soley returned from internet searches. Most of the time, you provide summary text and a conclusion. Most everybody likes this. BUT sometimes you just post a link, like in this thread , and you don’t even provide the answer to the original question in your post, making the OPster (or, in this case, poor UncleBill) link to the site and dig through the page to find the answer. This is annoying. suggestion Don’t do that.

You don’t always know anything about the topic prior to the search, so sometimes you get one wrong, or provide incomplete information. Given the quality and accuracy of 95% of your answers, this is not a high enough rate to annoy people (“it’s not like she’s doing what handy does”). BUT, when you are wrong, you’re either way too flippant about it or refuse to admit it. Or, since you stated that you don’t do vanity searches, you never even find out that your info was hogwash. Which, I might add, negates your stated purpose of “wanting to learn about new things” as to why you do your searching. suggestion Follow up on responses to your posts, discover if your information was correct and helpful, and be more accepting when you’re corrected.

Coldfire and Lynn and others in minty’s atmb thread made it clear about self-policing and Jr. Modding. Stating the (written) rule that a poster is breaking is desirable. Anything that involves interpreting any rule should be handled by the mods. It’s not really that hard, and it certainly wasn’t a personal vandetta against you by Coldfire, and it’s your responses to him more than anything else which lead me to think of you as somebody who can’t accept criticism.
That said, it’s too bad that these suggestions had to come in such a hostile environment. It’s sadder that nothing sank in.

We are all just posting our opinions & trying to find a common ground or an answer. Thankfully there are posters out there that almost always have some info and a kind word to boot. DDG has always seemed to be one of those posters & I have always appreciated it.

I’m really, really, short of time these days but I had to comment on this situation. First, a bit of personal advice. Nobody is loved by everybody. Personally, I think that Mother Teresa was a sanctimonious goody-two-shoes. If universal popularity is your goal, you’re going to be disappointed.
When anyone makes a difference, there are always going to be people who take exception for whatever reason. Some people think you’re too helpful. So be it. There are certainly worse things to be accused of. Many people do appreciate the assistance you’ve offered, especially in your “reference librarian” mode. Be content with that and forget the rest. How many questions have your detractors helped to correctly answer in GD or GQ? Speaking for myself, you have my official permission, indeed, my encouragement, to jump in whenever you google up anything at all relevant to any question I may pose.
As to your observations about the changes in the SDMB, I generally agree. I’ve been actually thinking of posting something in GD on this topic once I get a bit of time to properly follow the discussion. While I only occasionally visit the “lite” forums, I can see how they help the SDMB attract and keep the more serious posters. However, it can also encourage posters who have nothing particularly interesting to say to post in the more serious forums. You are not the only one who looks askance at the growing importance of MPSIMS et. al. IIRC, even an admin has expressed some reservations.
