Were 70's music lyrics more repetitive than today?

Obligatory visual reference.

No, it’s the…

Same as it ever was
Same as it ever was
Same as it ever was

That was… That was…

Surfin’ Bird, The Trashmen (1963)

I think the OP is technically right, lyrics are less repetitive today. The chorus was still dominant. There are still exceptions which tell a story, like uhh… Alice’s Restaurant.

Still some modern stuff is the exception such as (if you consider 1992 modern):

And now you do what they told ya
And now you do what they told ya
And now you do what they told ya
And now you do what they told ya
And now you do what they told ya
And now you do what they told ya
And now you do what they told ya
And now you do what they told ya
And now you do what they told ya
And now you do what they told ya
And now you do what they told ya
But now you do what they told ya
Well now you do what they told ya

Thankfully we had deep, thought provoking rock to open up our minds and ponder the world’s events:
Slow ride, take it easy - Slow ride, take it easy,
Slow ride, take it easy - Slow ride, take it easy.

Repetitive lyrics generally compliment catchy, simple music. Most people who listen to music generally couldn’t give a shit about the lyrics, anyway.Just gives them something to sing along to while having a shower or washing the car.Been that way before the 70’s and will continue to be that way for years to come.

“Long Long Time”, Guy Forsyth 2005

It’s been a long, long, long, long, long, long, long, long, long, long, long, long time.
It’s been a long, long, long, long, long, long, long, long, long, long, long, long time.
It’s been a long, long, long, long, long, long, long, long, long, long, long, long time.
It’s been a long, long, long, long, long, long, long, long, long, long, long, long time.
Since I felt fine.

I’m getting closer to my home,
I’m getting closer to my home,
I’m getting closer to my home,
I’m getting closer to my home,
I’m getting closer to my home,
I’m getting closer to my home,
I’m getting closer to my home,
I’m getting closer to my home,
I’m getting closer to my home,
I’m getting closer to my home,

When it comes to repetitive nonsense, the '80s weren’t much better:

Give me just one more night, one more night, one more night 'cause I can’t wait forever
Give me just one more night, one more night, one more night 'cause I can’t wait forever
Give me just one more night, one more night, one more night 'cause I can’t wait forever
Give me just one more night, one more night, one more night 'cause I can’t wait forever
