OK, I tried it at the link.
what I want to do is multi-quote but not until I’m done reading the entire thread.
GreysonCarlisle - Thanks for all the information and help! I certainly hope the PTB get this made into a sticky asap.
You’re welcome!
One thing that may or may not be important to you. When somebody puts a link into a thread, a little grey circle appears with a count of how many times it’s been viewed. If you open the link in a new tab, the count often won’t be updated, even if you have Open external links in new tab selected in your control panel.
So if you want to show that you followed the link, just open it directly. And if you’re disappointed that nobody’s followed your link, know that may not be the case at all.
Mouseovers have been enabled.
Thanks to all those doing the work!
If only there was some way to make use of that on a cell phone…
Sorry, I’m not seeing it. Are we talking about mouse-over OP preview in the thread list? Is there someone I have to be or something I have to do to enable this? (ETA: Yes, I refreshed the page.)
ETA-2: Okay, I got it. Oh, fer crying out loud, it’s only in the Straight Dope themes, not in Sam’s Simple theme. As discussed elsewhere, Sam’s has some important things going for it.
This post shows what happens to a “bad” post on Discourse. It gets hidden.
There are a couple of reasons why this could happen. If Community Moderation is on, enough reports by the right people can hide it. If it’s off, a mod agreeing that a reported post is against the rules can hide it.
This is one of those things that’s going to be very different about this new board.
Gee, a hidden post still takes up a lot of screen space. You’d think maybe it should occupy just a line, like ignored posts did at the Old Place.
Mouseovers are in all the themes, except for Sam’s Simple.
How do I compose a reply to one thread while I’ve got a drafted reply started to another thread entirely?
I was in the middle of sorting out a reply to multiple people in one thread when I realized I had a notification. I changed threads to check on the notification, and wanted to make a brief reply in that thread. But when I clicked reply in the second thread, the reply window from the first thread showed up.
I can see that it’s sometimes useful to be able to reply to multiple threads in one window. But attaching all that discussion from thread 1 in that case to what was supposed to be a quick reply on another subject in thread 2 would have made no sense at all.
Is there a way to have two different reply windows open in two different threads, without the content of one getting into the other?
Should be able to. The thing is that the reply window follows you around from thread to thread so that you can quote or link or whatever from multiple threads.
Open a new tab to the main page for each new post you want to make, and it ought to work, but that might depend on your device and browser.
Testing post 1
(Worked. But I got the “You are posting too quickly nag.”)
I had a separate tab open. Or did I?
– maybe I didn’t, maybe I went to the other thread directly from the first window. Because I left this post started here and went to a thread in another tab and made a reply post there, and that seemed to work and to keep them separate.
When I came back here I couldn’t find the reply window, so I clicked reply again, and got a window asking me whether I really wanted to abandon a prior post; when I said no the reply window showed up. Now I’m not sure whether I just missed that bar at the bottom; I’m pretty tired.
– did we ever find out what that intermittent checkmark is at the bottom of reply windows, by the way? Besides distracting.
I don’t really know what the check is for. My best guess is that it means your post is long enough to be saved as a draft.
Except it keeps coming and going, so that while the post keeps getting longer the checkmark disappears, then reappears. I’ve been trying to figure out a pattern, and failing. It isn’t always at the end of a sentence, either – just now it popped up in the middle of a word.
It seems to be that the system has saved your work in progress.
Hmmm. I wonder. Looks like it only shows up after the 5th character is typed, and that’s the minimum character limit.
I do know that blocking .svg-string.save-animation.svg-icon.d-icon-check.d-icon.fa makes it disappear (hopefully) forever.
