My wife and I have needed to get a reliable, not-likely-to-break-down-soon car for six years. The Olds we have now, we’ve sunk at least $5000 into fixing it every time it goes south, and we couldn’t sell it for more than $500. We’d arranged with her dad to buy the other Olds he has that’s a year younger than ours, for $500, and leave our current one there so it could be cannibalized for parts when the other one starts to go bad. So next week, when my wife returns from a trip up north, she was going to drive home in the newer Olds.
We discussed it last night on the ride home. Since the newer Olds is still about 10 years old, and the air conditioner can’t hold a charge for longer than a week and would cost at least a grand to replace, we agreed that at the end of next week, we would go and buy a Kia, because the payments would be around $200/month.
A couple of hours later, we get a call from her dad. When it’s over, my wife asks, “What’s the coolest car we could get if we could afford it?” I reply, “Oh, a PT Cruiser.” Well, her dad says they’re on sale in his city for $13,000 (they list at $18K), and the payments are around $200/month! And just so we can actually get one, he said he will cosign the loan for us (to save us having to go shop for one and spend all that time and risk getting turned down), through his credit union for City employees, which has a lower interest rate than any bank!
Not only that, but he also has a buyer for our current car, who will give us $500 for it! So - in a little over a week, we’ll have our first ever new car, and it’ll be a really cool one that we’ve coveted since we first saw them, and we’ll have got rid of our money hole and got $500 to pay the first two loan payments with!
: does happy dance :
Is my father-in-law a great guy, or what?!
I just thought I’d share. Do any of you own a PT Cruiser? Anything you’d care to tell us about them? Anything great, anything negative, your opinions are sought.
