We're not allowed to use fonts other than the default? When did this happen?

Oh, god, I’m old. I learned to type on a MANUAL typewriter.

I’d laugh, except I have no idea what the difference is between a manual and a, um, non-manual typewriter is. The IBM Selectric is not “manual”? (It’s the only typewriter name I could come up with.)

So, yeah, rest assured that you’re ancient.

The Selectric™ is an electric typewriter. One presses a key with any force (or lack of force) one chooses and the motor drives the key to the platen with exactly the same force.

A manual typewriter has no motor and no electric cord (or battery). The force with which any key strikes the platen is entirely dependent on the force of one’s fingers striking the key.

(Have you truly never seen a manual typewriter? Even my kids have seen those (although I confess they were playing on my old Royal Mercury™ college machine).)

I think I’ve seen them in movies.

I tried to purchase a manual tyrpewriter in 1998 and was informed they were no longer available (at least in the US).

I am putting twenty spaces at the end of this sentence. I am putting ten spaces at the end of this sentence. I am putting five spaces at the end of this sentence. I am putting two spaces at the end of this sentence. I am putting one space at the end of this sentence. You really can’t tell the difference on the web because your browser eats up the extra whitespace.

That being said, I continue to differentiate between full-stop end of sentence periods (double-space), abbreviation periods (single space) and decimal points (no space). Good typesetting software (e.g., TeX and LaTeX) adds a tiny smidgeon of extra space at the end of a sentence, not quite two spaces but more than one. Putting two spaces at the end of a sentence allows said software to more easily distinguish between sentences and abbreviations. A web browser may eat up extra whitespace, but then again a web browser isn’t good typesetting software.

I don’t think any moderator has made it clear, so I shall. If I’m repeating what was said before, I apologize.

The fonts, like bold, italic, underscore, colors, and the various other features, are there so that you can use them. They are NOT forbidden.

There’s two sides to this, of course. (1) Some people will complain about use of fonts or bold or colors or punctuation or whatever. This is their right, and you have the right to tell them where to file their complaints. (2) Common courtesy says that you should not have your posts formatted to be annoying. That would include things like:
one
word
per
line
or sdrawkcab gnipyt
or whatever might be annoying in terms of fonts and colors.

Thank you for replying, Dex.

Incidentally, I forgot to share this, from yesterday when I was reading the thread.

Me: Why do people hate Comic Sans?

Jeremy: Because he sucks! He’s not. funny. Don’t tell me you want him to come back?!

Me: …Comic Sans. Not Horatio Sanz. I know the answer to that question!
