"We're pregnant."

I have a confession to make. Although I hate the phrase myself, and mocked my brother mercilessly for using it with his wife a few years ago, I’m 18 weeks pregnant and have had to resist the urge on a few occasions to say “we’re pregnant”.

I’m not sure why, but it is definitely not because we are some cutesy couple wanting to announce our achievement to the world. I think for me, because it was so difficult getting pregnant, and because we had to go through IVF (which is stressful on both parties), it subconsciously felt like more of a joint venture. Hell, there were a team of people involved - maybe I should start name-checking them!

Also, I’m pretty shy, and hate being in the spotlight (inevitable if you are the pregnant one!), so again, I think it was my subconscious trying to shift the focus away from me.

You’ll all be delighted to know, though, that I have always stopped myself actually saying it.

I got pregnant not long after my sister-in-law, and she and I and my husband and my brother agreed that if any one of us EVER said ‘We’re pregnant,’* the other three should feel free to whap him or her upside the head until he or she got sense.

It’s a close thing, but I think I actually find ‘We’re pregnant’ more nauseating than morning sickness.

*referring to the couple in question. Not to me and my sister-in-law. We got to say ‘We’re pregnant’ if we wanted to, since we were.

The footnote is funny!

Oh yeah? Well, my girlfriend is carrying a fetus. We’re pregnant. I’ll say what I want, so suck it.
