I’m in Colorado, north of Denver. In the past 2 hours, we’ve seen maybe 7 or 8 planes going over our house, heading east. Anyone else? Obviously military planes, going… where?
Just a couple. We only have the National Guard and CAP nearby in Stillwater.
I’m guessing they’re on patrol or practicing maybe
Well, earlier I saw fighter jets (F-16’s I think) patrolling over New York City. Another disturbing element of the day.
Athena, I’ve got a fair bit of activity here at Buckley, especially for this late at night.
Howyadoin,
Lots of F-14s and F-15s both north and south of the city. Word has it there will be CAP missions 24 hours a day for a while.

Aha. I wondered why I was seeing lights in the sky. I’m in MI.
We were going to take Cranky Jr to the train station tonight to watch the trains go by, but I heard they’re not running either! I didn’t expect to see any planes, and was surprised when one went over at 10 pm.
Hmmm… wonder if we’re seeing CAP patrols? Or just moving planes around?
The numbers have definitely picked up. We saw maybe 8 in the past 30 minutes.
I’m in Denver also and I have noticed the same flights. They are definitely not fighters; they are too slow. Look to me to be of the commercial type (767, 747, etc.) though I am sure they are military.
On our local news (Minneapolis) they said to not be alarmed if we hear planes, there are supplies and military personnel moving about. I heard one plane at about 7 PM this evening. We are in the approach path for MSP International, the silence is eerie.
What’s going over our house aren’t 747’s or any other type of passenger plane. It’s hard to gauge how fast they’re going, but they sound very different than commercial planes. Louder, and more of a thrum than a commercial flight.
Fighters from Buckley are patrolling airspace in the area.
They’re DEFINITELY fighters. I can see them from my patio, and worked around them long enough to be sure.
Besides fighters, you can expect to see plenty of transports and aerial refuelling tankers - transports to get supplies and personnel to the east coast, and tankers to keep them and the fighters flying.
The Air Force, Navy and Marine Corps fighter aircraft are conducting combat air patrol over our cities. Even when civilian flights are allowed to begin again (noon today maybe) I’d be surprised if this operation stopped anytime soon. They currently have orders to investigate any unauthorized flight and, if necessary, take action. I’m fairly certain that this will extend to any flight that behaves erratically or suspiciously once civilian activity begins again.
I’m in Newton, MA – just west of Boston. Yesterday at 2:00 I heard planes and it took me a minute to figure out, “Hey, that’s not right.” I ran outside, along with everyone else on my block and looked up to see what I believe were the F15s that NY had requested from Boston.
Whoa. Who knew I’d see war planes in the sky in MY life time outside of an “air show.”
There were apparently some circling planes around Boston as well. I suppose it could have been those that we saw. That would explain why they were low enough to be visible. I’m not sure what caused this surreal vision.

Chicago here. Our house is under a flight path that during peak hours has planes overhead about every 3-4 minutes. It was very unsettling to look up in the sky and not see a single plane. It’s so quiet. Very eerie.
I’m in Memphis here: and ditto on how quiet it’s been. I’m used to hearing all the FedEx planes going by overhead after the commercial flights are done for the night… and now nothing.
But given the sheer volume that comes through this airport, under the circumstances I think I prefer the quiet to hearing military planes. Heard enough of those in Hawai’i.

I live two miles from a military base and there were a lot of jet fighters flying around during the afternoon and early evening yesterday. I’m used to the jets and the cargo planes flying overhead every day, but there seemed to be a lot more of them yesterday. The base is about 15 miles north of Detroit and a lot of these jets were definitely headed in that direction, so I’m assuming that they were patrolling the city.
I live about 50 miles south of the AirGuard base in Duluth. We had three pairs of fighters fly over our house last night. First pair at about 8:00 pm, last pair at 10:40. They were flying low, and close together, on a direct southerly route, identical paths all three times.
For all I know it was the same two planes all three times. Practice? Patrols? I dunno, but I like knowing that they’re up there.
Well, here’s something interesting.
I just heard jets screaming overhead. The noise did not go away. People came out of the streets to look up (my window angle was wrong so I couldn’t see the planes, but I could see all the people staring up). The noise continued for a long time before it stopped.
Then I get an email from my husband, who is at our home less than a mile from our small local airport (and several miles south from where I work). He said two fighter jets came screaming overhead so he went outside and saw a small plane circling overhead. The fighters circled it a few times before flying away.
Several transports left Wright-Patterson Air Force base in Dayton, OH this morning. Also, Tuesday afternoon (5:45pm) two fighters flew over Dayton at supersonic speed. They literally shook the whole city and scared the crap out of me. Especially when the idiot local news reported a rumor that a plane crashed into a Dayton hospital.
I’m in Southfield just north of Detroit. On my way to work this morning, I looked up expecting to see clear skies free of the usual traffic heading to Metro airport. Yet I was surprised to see that the skies weren’t clear.
There were many contrails heading N/S and E/W, as well as jets flying U-shaped routes over the Metro area. Obviously patrolling the airspace over the city. Very strange to see this kind of activity – I want to feel comforted by their presence, and yet I’m uneasy that they need to be there at all.
