The temperature has plummeted to 112-Where did I put that sweater?
Brrr.
It’s down to 75F where I am. Off to pull that winter coat out of storage.
Today was my first day at my new job and I found every excuse I could to stay in that air-conditioned office as late as I could.
When I did finally walk out the door and around the corner I was blasted with hot air. I’ve never felt anything like that before.
It’s getting up to about 84F in my apartment. Not great but as long as I don’t move I won’t break a sweat, haha. My cat is not having a good day, though.
Oh yeah, walking into a blast furnace is never fun. Parking lots are especially not fun, they are usually covered with concrete or blacktop which soaks up the heat and throws it back at you plus they are often filled with large metal objects and surrounded by buildings that have been baking all day so now you are walking into a large reflective oven.
Put some ice cubes in kitty’s water dish. Mine don’t seem to really care what temp the water is, but they will poke at the ice cube and then lick the water off their fur. Maybe put a towel down first.
Do they know what is causing such a crazy heat wave in places that don’t usually get that kind of weather?
Can you imagine that the Coeur d’Alene Ironman Triathlon was ran on Sunday when it was 101 degrees? You’d expect some slower times but both the men and women demolished the records. It boggles my mind.
I think it’s a mystery. Someone should do some research on this crazy climate change and see if they can figure it out.
Olympic track and field trial times were changed to try to get around the worst of it.
Ironman athletes are a little tougher than Olympians.
Yeah, smartypants, I got that far by myself
What I mean is, is it a high pressure system, low pressure system, the jet stream acting like silly string, El Nino, the mayor of Seattle forgot to sacrifice a chicken to the weather gods, that kind of thing.
The answer appears to be “it’s a heat dome” – warm winds getting trapped by a high pressure system in the area.
I’ve got this week off, just in time for the heatwave.
Yesterday, I figured I’d take advantage of the day off to grill a steak for dinner- that was a huge mistake. I couldn’t even open the grill before I turned it on without spraying the handle with water from the hose. Then I left the meat thermometer sitting in the sun for a minute or two, and I couldn’t use it to check the temperature on the steak- because the thermometer had heated up so much in those few minutes that it said the ambient temperature was 130f.
I (almost) feel a sense of shame about the weather here in the South Bay. I live about 2 miles from the beach, and I see that is not saving anyone in Oregon or Washington. However, this week my neighborhood is expected to peak today at…73 F ![]()
The rest of the week and through the weekend is expected to see daily peak temperatures of about…71 F. We have a marine layer every morning and every evening as well.
It is humid though. ![]()
Thanks, kenobi_65.
Where I live summer is 3 straight months of 85-90 and humid so low 70s and humid sounds pretty good right now
It’s much better today, where I am in Oregon at least.
We’re supposed to top out at 88F today. As of right now, we’re at (squints) 74F.
I was awake at 3:00 a.m., so I flung all the windows open to allow the 58-ish temperatures to cool down the house. Bears be damned. The A/C unit hasn’t kicked on once today as yet.
I bet it is two years before the AC latent demand is fully installed in the Seattle area.
As my manager pointed out, it’s not just that you need the AC for maybe 15 days in the summer. BUT you also need it when the air gets nasty from forest fires anywhere within about 1000 miles. So, instead of suffering thru a couple days here and there, you’ve also got to contend with weeks on end of bad air.
A/C is off. Front door and patio door are open. It’s cooled down to about 70º.
My sister lives in San Diego, and has said the same thing about their climate.
It looks like Lytton BC topped out at 48.6 C (119.5 F) Tuesday afternoon. Death Valley (Furnace Creek) was the only place I could find that was hotter (maybe anywhere in the world at that time?).
