I’m planning a trip thru WV the week after Labor Day. My focus will be the Civil War in 1861.
I’ve got all the sites related to the CW covered but am looking for tips on the roadways and any good used book stores along the way.
Here’s my route starting in Morgantown…
119 thru Grafton to Philippi
250 to Bellington
219 to Parsons and back
250 thru Huttonsville, over Cheat Mountain to Monterey and back to Huttonsville
219 south to Lewisburg
60 to Charleston
Again I’m looking for tips on the roads and any good used book stores along the way. I have from that Tuesday until Sunday when I need to be back in Michigan so plenty of time to take my time.
Wonder Books in Frederick, Maryland is a warehouse-sized used bookstore that’s not too far from West Virginia. There’s also a Wonder Books in Hagerstown, Maryland that’s even closer to West Virginia, but I’ve never been there.
However, I’m likely to miss it. I’ll be leaving Pittsburgh at dawn and since that is the one leg of my trip that will be on an interstate it will probably be closed when I get there.
Except he’s going to be 160 miles from Frederick and 140 from Hagerstown, not exactly a side trip I’d want to make for a book store. You might be better off just getting to Morgantown a bit later, or coming back there sooner.
That’s too bad, it’s got a large selection. Unfortunately, I haven’t really ventured very far from I-79 in the northern part of the state, so I don’t know what else may be out there. (I’m ten minutes from Grafton, but have never been there.)
Yup… I’m going to be in the boonies. Thus the question on the roads.
The last time I decided to explore WV I was fine from Wheeling to Parkersburg and then east as far as Clarksville. Then I decided to take a smaller road toward Grafton (and beyond)and never made it that far. I got sick of following slower trucks and took a left turn to get back on the interstate toward Harper’s Ferry.
At least this time I have destinations on my route every 20-30 miles to look forward to… I should be fine.
