West Wing 22 December

Why a rerun from season five?

Why a duck?

I don’t know, I’m new here myself.
Why a no chicken?

I thought that NBC wasn’t going to show any reruns of the show this year.

But I suppose they couldn’t find suitable alternate programming. Or they figured nobody was going to be watching anyway.

I thought it was great to have Leo back again though!

People hear this all the time about every show and I’m not quite sure where it comes from. In every season of every series on every network there are ALWAYS reruns during the year. This holds true for the Daily Show and General Hospital and The West Wing. Heck, it even held true for Firefly and that series wrapped up after 8 episodes.

From September to May there are approximately 40 weeks. Most networks order between 22 and 26 shows per year. Even assuming a late start and an early finish, there must be at least 8 reruns to fill the gap unless they schedule a movie of the week in the time slot instead.
Besides, it’s just not cost efficient to buy an entire season with no repeats.
First, with a schedule of 40 episodes per year, the entire cast and crew would get burnt out quicker.
Second, why pay for a brand new episode when advertisers will pay almost as much for the repeat?
Third, it’s Christmas. Most people aren’t watching as much TV right now and the networks know it. That’s why November’s Sweeps month, not December.

People may hear this about every show every year, but I never have.

And this link http://tv.zap2it.com/tveditorial/tve_main/1,1002,271|89303|1|,00.html
indicates that there weren’t going to be repeats.

It was a Christmas episode.

One notable exception is 24. It would confuse the hell out of people to show reruns, so they fill sweeps time with crappy reality shows.
