I put it in quotes because I don’t consider them an actual religious group. They’re a family of lawyers who use religiously-tinted incendiary tactics to goad people into overreacting in hopes of suing them for money.
WBC is one church. Sure, it says Baptist right there in the title, but wanting to fling a water -or otherwise- filled condom at them isn’t the same as wanting to splat Baptists at large with splooshy rubber products. Why would you assume there are others? This thread is about WBC.
I do like that the Foo Fighters Rick Rolled Westboro more than once:
**https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BD-fWMYcHXk**I thought the “church” was falling apart because the family was squabbling but I guess that is not the case so much.
Good grief. A wee bit harsh on the kidlet, no?
WBC condemns children born out of wedlock as sinning and Shirley is their public face.
No, they were picketing St. Patrick’s. They picket all kinds of stuff (like those funerals for soldiers who died in Iraq).
I gather they’re not big fans of the Catholic Church. Maybe they don’t hate them quite as much as they hate gay people, but they’re not fans.
Now, they chose yesterday for a reason, I’m sure. They probably didn’t come on this particular date because they got a deal on the flights or anything.
WBC evidently also hates Trump. Stopped clocks, etc.
I was never really a Nirvana fan, but time has proven to me that Dave Grohl and the Foo Fighters are the coolest Emmer Effers in rock and roll. This is one more example.
The WBC pickets places that are in the publice eye. If a church is small, and on a back street, they do not bother. For example, in Topeka, they would picket Christ the King Catholic, rather than St. Matthews or Our Lady of Guadalupe, because CtK is a church at a big, busy, intersection. When they have picketed Temple Beth Sholom they do not stand in front of the synagogue, but a block and a half away, on a busier street.
I think Westboro/the Phelps family hates everyone.
That’s not a joke. There’s a weird mental illness at the root of all this.
Paul in Qatar, these assholes picketted Mr Rogers’ funeral. MISTER FUCKING ROGERS. Fortunately, people just surrounded them and sang Mr. Rogers songs.
That’s pretty much on record about how he treated his kids. Ditto on the civil rights thing, I believe.
Doesn’t make it okay to pick on children. Shirley, yes. Her kids? No – they’re the victims.
They probably didn’t get the memo that the parade wasn’t taking that route. Or the parade organizers found out and quietly changed the route.
Then the police wouldn’t let them change location. I do believe most big cities make you get a permit to protest ect. You are allowed a place and time, but not allowed to just go anywhere you please.
Makes me happy thinking they were well out smarted, out maneuvered, or just plain too disorganized to get it together.
Why else would they just stand there quiet, when you F-up you don’t really want to bring more attention to yourself now do you?
That’s not it. This parade never went past St. Patrick’s. Ever. Route change had nothing to do with it.
No, they were just doing their thing.
I do suspect that, if they required a permit (I don’t know what the law is on that – there are very few of them, they’re not exactly having a parade), the police department and city government would turn them down. It would be very, very hard to keep things peaceful if they were allowed to display their vile signs at, say, Christopher and Seventh, right in front of the Stonewall Inn.
I looked them up. Said “devil spawn” are now in their thirties, and have left the church, and now speak against it. Their mother has cut all ties with them.
Stay classy, as always, Annie.
Nothing wrong with counter-protesting. Something is wrong with fantasizing about hurting them.
Which would Mr. Rogers do?
Which other religious groups do you think are not really religious?
For you it’s about them being, or claiming to be, a religious group. For me, and I suspect many here, it’s about them being a bunch of assholes.
Now, because you seem to want to make this about religious persecution:
- These assholes can say most anything they want. Not because they pretend to be a church, but because of the U.S constitution.
- This protects them from government interference with spewing their drivel. It does not protect them from most everybody realizing that they are assholes.
- It is not ok to physically hurt them. This is against the law. Fantasizing about hurting them is not my cup of tea, but is not against the law.
4 Nobody here, or for sure not many, advocated actually hurting them. - Anticipating a possible future question of yours: were someone to hurt them, and I were on the jury, I would not be ok with a lighter than normal sentence because the victim was an asshole.
You got us. The Westboro “church” members are being unfairly persecuted because we are bigoted against Christians.
Don’t you have your mass murder fetish list to keep up on?
Why are you defending these people? The SPLC has classified them as a hate group, and even fucking JERRY FALWELL thought they were fucked up.
She had 11 children, and the one born out of wedlock was the oldest son (per wiki) - when asked if she was going to hell she said " I know better" and had “put away” such behavior. Sure, Shirley, hell is for those other people.
