Wet and Gusty in Ireland

Heavens the weather has been dreadful the last couple of days. Tomorrow head up to County Mayo so hopefully the weather will improve up there.

That is if I am not killed on the one lane roads by the lunatics driving at some break neck speed.

It’s wet and gusty in Ireland in November? Next you’ll be telling me that most people there are Catholic! Hope you’re having fun anyway; pubs feel extra welcoming in poor weather.

I feel sorry for you visiting in this weather - it was lovely and dry about a month ago - I was walking about in a t-shirt.

your current weather situation is still light years better than my trip in december of 2002. ireland didn’t climb out of the teens and 20s (fahrenheit ) at night and the low 30s during the day - not to mention it was pitch black by 4pm - but i still loved every minute of it.

especially the beer.

there’s a pub about every ten feet in ireland. very sensible of them. we decided early on in the trip if we didn’t visit at least four pubs a day it wasn’t a good day, which leads me to my favorite story: we were at a pub in county kinsale after a long day of admiring kinsale crystal. it was my turn to get a pitcher of brew so i wandered up to the barkeep. i think we were drinking smithwicke’s if i remember rightly.

as the bartender is filling the pitcher i happen to notice something which leaves me aghast with horror. on a pull next to the smithwicke’s i see the familiar logo of a popular american beer I personally detest.

i say to him in my inimitable american accent, ‘oh, you have gotta be kidding me… you (meaning ireland) have the best beer on the freakin’ planet, and you have :::shudder::: Budweiser :::shudder::: ON TAP? That is just wrong. What’s up with that?’

as he hands my refilled pitcher over, he looks me straight in the eye without spilling a drop and then says that wonderful accent, ‘it’s for the tourists, love.’

I’m in Cleveland, OH on my vacation, and the weather has been gorgeous, must have been nearly 20 degrees today (in irish temperatures  ). I thought I was gonna get a sunburn.

Surf’s up!

Yep, little known fact: Ireland has some of the best surfing in the world.

Well, still in Ireland (at Achill Sound) and the weather is even worse. It has been a fun trip though. Back to Dublin tomorrow and then to London on Saturday.

Yes the beer is good (apart from Fosters). I have not been able to find Caffreys this time which has been disappointing.

Scubaqueen- I have decided that Kinsale makes some of the best seafood chowder of all time!

I’ve heard you’re refusing to import better weather from the EU.

Fosters = piss.

oh my yes! wonderful seafood. it was all i ate while i was there, having been warned NOT to eat the beef. not because it wasn’t safe but because it wouldn’t be prepared in the way an american palate would be accustomed to.

one of our party didn’t heed the warning. he was really sorry he ordered beef. didn’t make the same mistake again. :stuck_out_tongue:

Hey, Cicero, do they still have Bulmers on tap? most awesome cider i’ve ever sampled. completely blows away strongbow and woodchuck here in the states and you can’t get it here.

You should stick around for the firesale, might be able to buy a county or two.

Outside Ireland it is called Magners.

It seems to be common in pubs on the east coast but not universal in the midwest.

There was a Dave Allen skit portraying a TV weather presenter talking about the high winds in Ireland. He shows the map, and Ireland is to the east of England. :stuck_out_tongue:

Rainy and cool here, with some blustery winds. We had hail today. It’s a few degrees above freezing right now. (My weather widget says 41ºF, but the carmometer – which is fairly accurate – said 36ºF earlier.)

That’s what the Irish always tell me. Oh, it was lovely last week. Oh, they’re predicting lovely weather after you leave. Meanwhile, whenever I’m there the BBC seems to delight in showing day after day a map where everywhere else in the UK is clear except for a gray smudge over Northern Ireland. :smack:

I wondered if the south would be any better, but the one weekend we visited Cork and Cobh, it poured buckets.

Why can’t I have a boyfriend with folks in the Caribbean, I ask you?

I wouldn’t put a bid in for County Kinsale though, might get burned on that one…

Bulmers/Magners and Strongbow are to cider what Bud Lite and Coors Lite are to beer.

Cicero it looks like you should have a bit better weather once you get here. Maybe some showers but not as blowy. If you want a decent pint of proper beer then look for London Pride or Youngs both of which are plentiful in London. Real cider is harder to come by in your average pub but look for Weston’s Old Rosie. But be careful with it, it’s 7.5%.

Cos once you go Mc you can never go back…

Back in Dublin and I almost kissed the ground when we arrived. Will rush out and have a Bulmers at the Hairy Lemon!

BBL! Weather is great.
