Wet driveway before applying sealer

The directions clearly state, that I was supposed to apply the blacktop sealant to a wet driveway.

I, of course, being the expert at driveway sealing now since I’ve done it 3 times, failed to read this line, and failed to remember that I’ve always worked with a squeegee and a hose. :smack:

But it’s down now. It looks fine, except, um, where I  drove on it 30 hours after applying. There’s very clear tire marks there. So I haven’t parked on it again yet.

So, good grief, what have I done? Have I condemned myself to a trashy looking driveway for the rest of my homeowning days? What is the reason for applying the sealant to a wet driveway? Is there some chemical reaction that requires water? Should I wet it all down with a hose and reseal it?

Any help would be appreciated.

Who made it? What is the name of it? There are many sealers on the market. I was looking at some, it has a 4 year guarantee. I didn’t know you have to wet it first…where did you buy it?

It sounds like your sealer has water as one of its components ( Description of types of sealers here. ) Hosing down the driveway before applying such a mix would thin the material and allow it to better penetrate small cracks in the surface.

It’s Gardener Pro-Gel (advanced no-stir driveway sealer)

6-year warrantee

6x polymer concentration

Application: Temperatures must be 65º F and rising, but below 100º F for application. Rinse and clean driveway using driveway cleaner. Properly treat oil spots with cleaners, or sealer will not adhere and will flake off. After driveway is rinsed thoroughly, apply sealer to the damp pavement. A small amount of watert separation in the pail is normal. Pour out halve the product and work it across the blacktop with a brush or squeegee. Complete the entire driveway in one application to prevent color shading. Do not over-apply, which will result in tracking. Do not apply if rain or cold temperatures are expected in 36 hours.

As for contents, I’m having a tough time finding a “list of ingredients”…

Aha, here’s the list of ingredients:

Asphalt
Clay
Fillers
Polymer
Coal tar

Maybe you should call them? but according to

If its 85 deg+ then you should wet it down first.

I can’t find a website for them but there is another one at:

With some nice instructions.
