"Whacha got back there, ma'am...?"

“Just some dogs, officer. 140 dogs.”

“Is that all?”

“And one cat.”

“That’s what I thought. Step out of the car, ma’am.”

From the link:

“For years, the women operated Hearts for Hounds, a well-known and well-regarded dog boarding facility in Long Beach, city officials said. They were headed for Virginia to hold dog auctions.”

Man, it’s always extra-sad when people involved in rescue wind up doing something like this. I really have to wonder about the lone cat, though - did they mis-identify it or something?

That’s a weird pair of mugshots, by the way: the woman on the left is clearly sobbing, and the one on the right has a weird, zoned-out smile. Hope it was Leftie who was driving - Righty looks stoned our of her everlovin’ mind.

Dog Auctions?

How the hell do you fit 140 dogs (and one cat – poor kitty!) into one van? Even if they were all chihuahuas… I can’t figure it out. Must have been like Dog Tetris.

Also note: I think “dog rescue” and “dog auctions” are mutually exclusive. Generally, rescuers of dogs are not in the business of pimping them back out at auctions. Dog auctions are the mechanism used to market puppy mill dogs. Pet stores buy poorly bred dogs from these mills from the auctions. I question whether these people were actually rescuing or if they were trying to make a buck.

No Dogzilla there were 21 dogs in the van and the rest were in the UHaul truck.

I stand corrected, but that’s still a lot for either vehicle. Doesn’t even matter what size UHaul truck it was. 120 dogs and one cat is still a lot.

Must have been really horrible conditions. Poor dogs. The more I think about it, there’s no way either could have been “rescuing.” Dog rescues don’t deal in bulk like that.

Shoulda put them on top of the vehicle. I’ve heard that’s appropriate.

I wonder how you would auction off a cat that just drove across the country in a U-Haul with 120 dogs ~~~

I have a deep suspicion that the actual mastermind of the whole operation was that one cat?

:smack: Of course! How could I have not seen it all along!

But…why?

To get rid of the dogs, of course…
