According to Wiki the first turbo(with whale tail) came out in 1978.
The tail on the Porsche would have been specially designed to vent cooling air into the car’s engine bay, and later I think they also fitted an air to air intercooler under the spoiler. I don’t think it would have done much good on a Camaro, where the engine is in the front of the car.
