According to Wiki the first turbo(with whale tail) came out in 1978.
The tail on the Porsche would have been specially designed to vent cooling air into the car’s engine bay, and later I think they also fitted an air to air intercooler under the spoiler. I don’t think it would have done much good on a Camaro, where the engine is in the front of the car.

Oh, on the Camaro it wasn’t for functionality…just looks. Although I thought it also helped create some downforce on the back end if it were going fast enough.

Yes. I first heard of it in 2006; it was listed under the “don’t” section of my school’s dress code in the handbook, along with a picture.
Yup.

Yes, in reference to a visible thong. No, in reference to a car spoiler.
The Wikipedia article on the term was started on 19 January 2006: “whale tail n. the appearance of thong or g-string underwear above the waistband of pants, shorts, or a skirt.”
[QUOTE=Inigo Montoya]
Always thought it was a kind of deer. I’ve never seen a doe in a thong. But I think I might start referring to wimmin as "doe"s now. 'cuz that’d be kinda fun.

Especially if you affect a speech impediment that makes your "d"s sound like "h"s ![]()
I knew both - the Porche one was first, obviously. My understanding of the Whaletail was that being a rear-engined rear-wheel-drive car, the 911 was prone to losing the back end while cornering hard, so the whale-tail was there to increase backend traction.
And I don’t like the other sort of whaletail at all.
