I used to watch that show, but I must confess I haven’t given it a thought in all these years. **Ed Sullivan ** always comes to mind when I think of those early rock performances.
I should have pointed out that Tony Martin wasn’t always the host. There were a variety of guest hosts. (Cyd Charisse was Martin’s cohost for that episode.) I think Bing Crosby was the most frequent one.
I too had forgotten all about that show. Seeing that clip reminds me once again why Ed Sullivan’s show was so much cooler than the rest: no lip-synching.
Now I seem to remember seeing The Who on The Smothers Brothers show, and CSNY on The Johnny Cash Show. I wonder if those were real performances, and if they’re on youtube.
The Who played live on the Smothers Brothers. That was the episode in which way too much explosive powder was packed into a flash device and the resulting explosion caused Pete Townsend’s partial deafness.
However, not every band even on that show played live. The Jefferson Airplane were told to lip-synch for some reason and Grace Slick famously sang into the amplifier plug instead of the microphone.
