Point Break is my favorite action movie of all time, and the last action movie I really loved. It made it seem like the action genre, which ruled in the '80s, was going to be even better in the '90s and beyond, but it turned out to be the last whimper. Speed was ok; I liked it, but didn’t love it. Point Break fucking ruled. I still remember the trailer guy saying “One hundred percent pure adrenaline.” I knew I had to see it.
I cannot sit through an action movie now. They’re so bad that they literally make Point Break look extremely well-written and executed.
Wow. I thought Point Break was alright, but we are clearly in a golden age of action movies right now. Is there anything actionwise from the last ten years you like?
I like the movie because it shows Keanu at his second most gorgeous. The only movie in which he looks better is was *My Own Private Idaho.
*. In my perfect world, Keanu would take a vow of silence and then appear on my bed.
I get the impression that the movie is trying to put forth the idea that there is a mystical bond that all true surfers share - sort of like the force with boards rather than Yoda. Keanu is changed from a conventional cop through his immersion in the surfer culture. He and the Swayze character may be on different sides of the law, but they share the surfer’s bond. Keanu realizes he can’t shoot Swayze because his surfer bond is stronger than his law and order bond (but he’s conflicted and it’s close, thus the screaming etc.). It’s poetic surfer justice that he lets Swayze commit suicide by riding the lethal-sized wave.
Also, I’m sure that it didn’t escape somebody’s notice that by never producing Swayze’s body and leaving it a little up in the air - the possibility of Point Break II stays very much alive.
If you count scifi (Star Wars and Trek) or fantasy (Lord of the Rings), then yes. But the pure “action” genre, like what Jason Statham does? Fuck no. I cannot think of one. I think Speed was literally the last one I was able to sit through. Everything before that I’m probably just viewing through nostalgia glasses. I think I probably just hate the genre. I’d rather listen to opera while getting punched in the stomach.
I’m fairly certain that it was only one of the Peppers, Anthony Kiedis. I thought that he matched up with Keanu very well, acting wise.
Except for possibly Roadhouse, it’s the best bad movie of all time, with truly, truly awful dialogue that’s delivered terribly, though it’s beautifully shot and well choreographed.
Its director has a movie that’s in theater’s now.
Authority figure (with a rebellious streak) infiltrates the villain’s domain to bring them down and gets caught up in the villain’s viewpoint/philosophy, has mercy/sympathy and lets them go.
Surfing and Skydiving = Point Break.
Muscle Cars + Rice Rockets = Fast & Furious.
Cocaine = In Too Deep
Bells Beach, Australia. The final “hundred year storm” scene was actually shot at Indian Beach in Ecola State Park, which is near Cannon Beach, Oregon.
Loved the movie despite Keanu’s laughable line delivery.
