What am I missing

I just finished reading Sandman by Neil Gaiman and I’m frustrated. I’m frustrated because I know many many people who would also derive much pleasure from reading it, none of whom will touch the thing because it is a “comic book” and therefore can not possibly have any content suitable for adult consumption  . This got me thinking- screw them then  , I also tend to read books from a fairly limited selection of genres and it is therefore probable that I also am missing out on much enjoyable literature.

I would therefore like other dopers recomendations of worthy reading material, not just good books but books that everybody should read regardless of whether they normally enjoy that genre or not.

My suggestions are as follows (run out and buy these)-

Fantasy
Tad Williams - Memory sorrow and thorn, Terry Pratchet - Good Omens, Small Gods, George R R Martin - A song of ice and fire, Neil Gaiman - Sandman

Science Fiction
Ursula Le Guin - The lathe of Heaven, Alan Moore - Watchmen, Ian M Banks - The use of weapons

Horror
Stephen King - The Shining

I can think of many more but I think the above stand as examples of books that I would defy anyone not to enjoy.
So anyway would you all please give me your suggestions and then run off and read Sandman, I promise you will not regret it.
