What are "child forums"?

I see this when I search asking if I want to include child forums. Is there one place where children post, or are there places children are not allowed to read? I really hope it is the latter. I have been here for long enough and should know, but never seen this asked.

So close and so far. You can see that we have child forums, but didn’t want to waste that two minutes on a search eh? Here yah go.

And “hoo boy!” Since I know you share my taste for the odd:

Thanks, you got me. I was looking for child forums on the search instead of “child forums” as a search.

Thanks for the last link.

Well, when a mommy forum and a daddy forum love each other very much…

That joke is in one of the links, in fact you probably made it the first time.

This board isn’t set up with child forums (unless they are invisible to non-mods). A child forum is a sub-forum related to the parent forum. Some board are set up that way; you could have a forum for geography, and child forums for individual countries, for example.

A child forum is a subforum of a main forum, devoted to a particular common category of discussion that might be a part of the main forum’s general area. For example, you might have:

-Great Debates
—Debates on American Politics
—Debates on Religion

or

Cafe Society
—Book Discussions
—Movie Discussions

SDMB has always adopted a spare, broad-based structure rather than a multiplicity of special-interest subforums. I think they’re wise.
