What are paw paw's?

As already mentioned, no, they’re not. Sometimes papayas are called pawpaws, but that’s not the fruit this thread is about.

As was noted in post #8, the American pawpaw is different and completely unrelated to the tropical papaya. (However, the name may have originally been derived from papaya via Spanish.) Pawpaws are rarely sold in markets outside of their native range, because they don’t ship well. Papayas are commonly called pawpaws in Australia.

We had a huge paw paw tree in our yard growing up, I ate way too many of them, but haven’t had one in decades.

You don’t need to use the claw when you pick a pear of the big pawpaw.

Back when I lived in Indiana, they would show up in the farmer’s market around Labor Day. They make a really really good sorbet.
