What are the great sniping - stalking - sneaking games?

June 25, got it marked on the calendar!

Oh, ok good to know, thanks! Unfortunately it’s still 3rd person, unless there is a mod fix. I wish I could get over my distaste for 3rd person games-- seems like a minor thing, but after playing a lot of FPS games in a row I find the over-the-shoulder thing annoying.

Those infested drilling derricks? Those are easier if you’re on top of something and force them to fly at you. For other swarms, lure them back to your ship and shoot them from atop that or anywhere else that might be convienient.

It’s a game. Games are meant to be fun, and it’s not fun to force yourself to try to like something you don’t. You should never feel like you have to explain your tastes. We all have hangups about games and things we like and don’t like.

True, and I appreciate you saying so, but there’s something to be said for getting out of one’s comfort zone and acquiring tastes for things we didn’t think we liked. Otherwise we’d all still be on a diet of nothing but chicken nuggets and mac & cheese :smirk:

I do find the first-person experience much more immersive, though.

Just following up on two of the games mentioned so far.

  1. Starfield. Please note my complaints so far are largely about the terrible optimization and their dogged clinging to the Creation engine which was nigh-obsolete for FO4 and really unsuited for anything modern. The game looks good, but because of underlying choice plays unimpressively on my rig (which isn’t the new hotness tbc) that handles CP2077 on high. The worlds themselves are brilliant looking, and I enjoy the open elements that a jetpack brings (fond memories of ME: Andromeda there!) but the story (so far) is a dressed up-take on a very tired trope, and I don’t like any of the 4ish companions I’ve met so far. And while stealth is vaguely workable (at least without companions) the investment you’d need to make it workable is huge. I’ve heard that with enough investment in concealment and RNG into concealment gear (think Chameleon Legendary in FO4) it’s better, but from my limited and low level experience so far, it’s more snipe, use your mobility to MOVE, hide, and wait again.
  1. Cyberpunk 2077 - Stealth sniper is a major thing, though with the usual caveats. There are plenty of quests that are totally suboptimum for it (along with the final battle), and with the right cyberware and skills it’s absolutely OP. A single example being my favorite tech rifles where you can mark you enemies via hacking internal systems, track them through a tiny room in the bottom of the building, and head shot them through the walls. But between hacking for stealth and remote kills, close up kills with silenced pistols and/or throwing knives, high tech smart snipers, and tech wall/charged shots, you have a TON of options.

  2. Mention to my last recently played FP game, Outer Worlds (1) - most “silenced” weapons (reasonably available in games or crafted) aren’t normally Video Game Silent. So it’s one or two shots and then the rest of the groups are on. Stealth isn’t emphasized but can be stacked enough to be useful, but can be rough with companions, even ones who have complementary skills - better to go without in many ways. There’s something of a shortage of actual base weapons in game as well, and only two classes of them are close to sniper forward IMHO.

Apologies if I overstepped my bounds in speaking for you about your opinions on Starfield in this thread, however briefly.

ISTR FPS mods for the Just Cause series and the Mafia series. Regarding the latter: the third in the series should be the one of interest, being set in '68.

Both series are listed as 3rd person on Steam, alas. Maybe I do need to get over my dislike of 3rd person shooters, since so many good games seem to be in 3rd person. Be a shame to limit myself.

ETA: Oh, did you mean there are mods to make them 1st person? I initially read ‘FPS mods’ as ‘FPS mode’.

Yeah, just about all of these games we’re talking about have the ability to install a mod that turns them into true 1st person games if they don’t automatically come with that option as part of the original game.

That’s good to know, but I wonder a couple things-- if the game is designed to be 3rd person, how well is a forced 1st person perspective mod going to work? Will it seem janky? And if a lot of well-regarded games are 3rd person, there must be some gaming preference or advantage to that, I would imagine. I can’t think of what, though. It seems like 1st person would always be a more immersive, more enjoyable experience. But again, maybe that’s just me.

The only 3rd person advantage I can think of is if someone wanted to do video captures of their gaming, which I know a lot of gamers do. Seems that games like FO4, where you can change camera mode from 1st person to 3rd person at will would be best, but maybe that costs a lot of development effort to do so.

I usually judge that by how well-received the mod is. Because just as you say, it could look awful and maybe even break things. The ones mentioned here seem to be pretty successful, but I certainly can’t vouch for them personally because I haven’t tried any of them out.

Shocked that Sniper Elite hasn’t been name-dropped here yet. I am a WW2 buff, haven’t played it, but have heard good things about it.

Looks good, but alas, another 3rd person game. Also, for an older game remastered in 2019, seems a bit pricey at $35. Maybe, like I said, I need to get over my issues with 3rd person shooters so I can enjoy more games like this one. And keep an eye out for a Steam sale. Looks like, from the video preview at least, you eventually get a chance to take out Hitler, and who wouldn’t want to do that?

I think there was a 1930s German dating sim that also let you do that. Let me try to dig that up.

I have played them and they are excellent. I’d probably look to pick up Sniper Elite 3 or newer on sale. Though if 3rd person movement is a deal breaker then so it goes but they are literally all about sneaking up on a group, picking a location and using distractions, noise, etc to cover your shots as you take them all out. Although movement is 3rd person, shooting is very usually done through your scope so in a first person style view.

I think this might be why I’m forgetting that some of these games are 3rd person. I spend so much time looking down a scope that my brain remembers them as 1st person.

I probably would have accidentally suggested Sniper Elite for the same reason. Until I saw the comments and looked again on Steam, I remembered it as first person, probably because most of your memorable time is spent looking through a scope.

No, you didn’t overstate, I am so far enjoying parts of the game but the whole is letting me down!

I just wanted to speak specifically to the points of a stalk-stealth-snipe game, and in some of the lower grav areas, being able to make as much space as you want with a freakin’ JETPACK can be fun.

You’re all in the clear with me, scout’s honor and no in-game sniper rifle on/behind my back.

I was grabbing a freebie on Fanatical, and saw that Sniper Elite 5 is only $4 right now!

If you go on Steam itself it’s $50, so that massive discount is only available through that other site. If you get something on Fanatical, you get Steam keys and can unlock it on Steam as usual. There is no tie to Fanatical afterward, except that they might want to send you a newsletter after you sign up. (Which you can then unsubscribe from as I did, and they never bother me.)

Good point, and I will definitely consider picking up a Sniper Elite game at some point, thanks.

And no silenced pistols, throwing knives, high tech smart snipers, or tech wall/charged shots, either, I hope? That’s a relief! :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:
