A good friend of mine and his wife are off to China in a few weeks to teach. They will be gone essentially for two years.
Now, my friend and I have participated in many, many, many cutthroat games of hearts and euchre. It will be tough not to get a chance to play a few hands for the next couple of years…
But, there are websites such as Microsoft Zone and Yahoo games where we could play… However, even though China has made tremendous strides towards becoming more “open”, it is not all the way there yet.
So, would my buddy and I be able to play some cards online once he is over there?
Note: I am not asking for ways “around” any restrictions that are in place.
CNN and BBC are blocked, and so are Geocities websites. Yahoo mail is accessible (so is the SDMB). I think there’s a good chance that the sites you mentioned are accessible. One of our dopers who currently live in China can tell you more.
very few sites are blocked. At least, let me say there are very few sites I try to access and can’t.
Just tried CNN and BBC and bothwork for me. I haven’t tried geocities recently but it could well still be blocked. Google was blocked for about 2 weeks last year. Newswires like bloomberg, reuters, and any newspaper I’ve ever tried to access work. I have accessed Taiwanese government sites. I’ve ahem heard that porn sites work.
Chinese games sites are huge. A lot of people get on line to play card games, mahjong and the like. So, I think you would have no problem.
