Somebody likes that? I’ve never heard of anyone but Verhoeven himself defend it.
The Piano was a really upsetting movie to me. I have never seen another movie where the character was so repellant to me that I had to get up and leave the room. Harvey Keitel is a great actor, The Piano is probably a great movie, but it really, really disturbed me like no other movie I can name.
Kill Bill I, Revenge of the Sith, and Sin City . Just look at my thread. I’ve never seen so many people divided in my life:
“Starship Troopers the Film is a viciously effective, multilayered satire”
- banned Doper lissener
“I think his most successful text/subtext juxtaposition is with Starship Troopers”
- banned Doper lissener
“Starship Troopers is up pretty near my lifetime top ten”
- banned Doper lissener
Don’t forget that the final straw in his banning was on that specific movie.
Any of Todd Solondz’s films, as well as American Psycho.
I can’t see it as a good film, but I find it highly enjoyable as schlock.
You know how people who have read the book always complain that the film of that book is so much less… well, to the OP: I read the screenplay of Magnolia, and LOVED it. When I saw actors in the roles, I disliked all of them except Philip Seymour Hoffman.
But, I put the film in my “so-so” category.
Sir Rhosis
The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension splits people into “absolutely love it” and “the stupidest movie I’ve ever seen” camps. I’ve never met a “it was OK” person.
Citizen Kane. There are those who think it’s the “best ever” film and those who think it’s pretentious garbage.
The **Matrix ** films. I have friends who love these. I thought the first was such a waste of time that I refused to accompany them to the second and third.
Great googly moogly! We have 30 posts before anyone mentions Santa Sangre? I love this movie, but many people actually become violently angry after watching it. In fact, that seems to happen with a lot of Jodorowsky movies… hmm…
oops! one of those links should have been to this post.
In fact, after reading his posts in that thread, I’m pretty sure that hamlet just flat out did not care for the film
I think the same could be said for The Passion of the Christ
I love Starship Troopers
Titanic made a buttload of money, but every other thread on this messageboard has a post where somebody claims that it’s the worst movie of all time. (It hasn’t happened in this thread yet, but just wait… 5… 4… 3…)
Divisive? Just about anything by Spike Lee.
Someone once threatened to hit me because of my (negative) views on the artistic importance of Spike Lee. I can’t recall that any other opinion I’ve ever expressed on an entertainment-related subject has ever drawn a threat of physical violence.
I haven’t seen “Fight Club”, but my understanding is that men and women often have different takes on it.
“Clerks”, though mainly because it tends to lead to a discussion of whether Kevin Smith is a hack or not.
I’m a woman and I loved the violence in Fight Club but thought the overall philosophical message a lot of guys seemed to be getting from it was overrated and frankly funny. Would watch again. Neither love it nor hate it though.
The Piano has come up surprisingly often in my hearing - either art film brilliance or “ewwww, Harvey Keitel naked.”
Huh. I saw it once, thought it was OK. Wouldn’t watch it again. My friend thinks it’s High Art. We’re both women.
I thought this thread was going to be about stuff like
Birth of A Nation
A Clockwork Orange
Lolita (both versions as well as the book)
The Last Temptation of Christ
Blue Velvet
Happiness
Hail Mary
which are more controversial morally, religiously & politically.
