I apologize if this has been discussed already, I clearly don’t know how to search a thread properly - when I tried to search on “To Have and Have Not” I got nothing.
In the movie when Lauren Bacall is singing the song “How Little We Know”, the people around the piano, and even Hoagy Carmichael (as Cricket) are saying/whispering/chanting something in the background. I have watched this film a dozen times and I still can’t make out what (or why) they are saying.
Anyone have a clue?

And it doesn’t make much sense within the context of the rest of the song. However, next time I watch it I will check it out.
I am dying to know what your source is - did you lip-read it? Hoagy Carmichael’s autobiography? Is it in the sheet music (I don’t think so, I’ve seen the sheet music)? Please divulge
