What are these sites and why are they swarming me?

I have a blog (who doesn’t?) and I’ve noticed that I’ll get one hundred or more referrals from these strange sites. Some are just a string of numbers and letters except for two: www. justforlaughsgag. tv and adfuc.us. If I click on them they take me to different and strange places. One wants to download something, another leads to a url shortner, justforlaughs seems to lead to a search engine with no search-- but which 200 people need to search my dinky blog when I only get, like, 50 people through Google?
I’ve decided not to click on any site that refers more people than Google since I’m afraid they’ll infect me with something. Does anyone know what that’s all about?

It’s spam. Probably referral link spam by your description, or perhaps pingback/trackback spam. In this particular case the spammers are sending bogus links to a large number of web sites in order to track which ones publish those links, so they can later spam them with their real payload. Kind of like ringing doorbells in order to see who is home.

Neither of those domains is registered. If they take you anywhere it may be your browser doing a “smart” search, or it may mean your computer is infected with malware. That’s unrelated to the spam, you should run a virus/spyware scan just in case.

Some of this is guesswork. If you PM me some more details (your site address, a screenshot of the page where you’re seeing those referral links) I can double check. Please don’t post spam links in public even if they look harmless, they’ll attract more spam.

Yeah, I should have broken that link. I didn’t think of it because I wasn’t posting a link, if you know what I mean.

I broke the link.
