I was in NYC on Wednesday and noticed they demolished the building that had the subway station in it. The one that used to have the coffee shop on the second floor (and I think it had the cool Concorde display on it too). I thought that building would be there forever. It’s kind of cute how they actually left the subway station part standing though.
The Concord and the Times Square Brew Pub have been gone for about a month now. The building behind them that had a big arcade had been gone for a while. They are now building another building there.
I predict it will be tall and have lots of glass and probably some sort of Video screens.
I’m not familiar with exactly which building/construction site your talking about, but I know they are building the new New York Times headquarters around… errh… Times Square. Maybe that’s it.
Crap. Crap is what they are building in Times Square. Yes, yes, they saved the Eltinge and the New Amsterdam and the Victory, but everything else has fallen to the wrecking ball and has been replaced by what looks to be the Gerald R. Ford Junior High School Students’ Center. Oh, Stuy, the new Times building will be across the street from Port Authority, and they are demolishing some beautiful 19th-century brick and marble buildings to put it up.
Take a peep at what Longacre . . . I mean, TIMES Square used to look like . . . When huge stick-figure ladies menaced us, we could dash into the Astor or the Bond building . . . http://lileks.com/postcards/ny/tssouth.html
The New York Times’ new building will actually not be in Times Square, although it will be close. Construction hasn’t started on it, but it will be on 8th Ave. between 40th and 41st Streets (Right across from the Port Authority Bus Terminal). Currently, there are some stores there including the famous hat store Knox Hats.
I’m not 100% sure but I think the area under which the British Airways’ Concorde hung will become the new Arthur Andersen building.
