Probably eating Indian food and then going to the Miracle Block.
The Miracle Block is well-known for it’s Xmas lights, but on New Year’s Eve they drop a ball and there’s a guy running around in a diaper pretending to be baby new year.
People crowd the street drinking and kissing and it’s a lot of fun.
New Year’s Eve, I will probably be cooking the traditional Pork and Sauerkraut for the New Year’s Day feast, and then heading to Harrisburg with my hun Jayjay for a New Year’s Eve party at a friend’s house. We are going to stay in Harrisburg overnight, and then head north for the weekend, visiting with friends, and spending holiday time with Jayjay’s mom. Will also be celebrating my 40th. That’s right, another New Years baby here.
For those of you without plans living in the New York City / New Jersey area, there’s always the 3rd annual  Nude  Year’s Eve clothing optional Party hosted by BiZone.
That sounds like sooooo much fun. mr smartini worked as a bartender during college…can we come?
Actually, we usually spend that week with my husband’s extended family at a condo at the beach. Eat too much, shop too much, play board games and cards…then at midnight we take the champagne down to beach. Sometimes we try to start a bonfire, but we are city folks, and not too adept at that, so one should bring a coat to stay warm. No way I would want to be on the road that night.
Last time I went home for New Years, we spent it in San Felipe, Mexico. We might be doing the same thing this year, I’m not sure. Either way, a good time was had by all.
Well, the sofa might be a bit crowded, but you’re always welcome at our place!
If we’re also covering New Year’s Day, I’ll watch the 1960 version of The Time Machine (an annual ritual for me) and then my partner and I will join his family for brunch at at a local Pan-Asian cuisine restaurant which has a killer menu.
Church NYE service, then the annual party for the church singles at my house. Sometime past midnight, I’ll sneak listens of Coast To Coast AM. Next day, the annual venture to see the latest LOTR movie- yay for Part IV, The Scouring of the Shire coming out this year!
What?
Actually, we will probably go to see some movie- I’m kinda hoping Webber’s PHANTOM.
My brother and I and our two friends have had pitiful little parties for the past five or six years. This year we’re shaking things up a bit and having it at my house instead of my friend’s, because we just got a really big TV. We’ll start it off with dinner at my friend’s house with all our parents and siblings, then probably go on an ACME run to stock up on ice cream and chips and stuff, then spend the rest of the night watching movies and stuff. We never do as many fun things as we plan on doing, but it’s always fun anyway. One year we missed watching the ball drop because we were playing the video game version of “Who Wants to be a Millionaire.” Last year we watched it on the Spanish channel.
Ghanima wrote she’s taking the BART…what’s a BART?
Swampbear - just to make me really crazy - what would the temperature be there on New Years. Here it’s likely to be anywhere between freezing and sub freezing with lots of snow!
Oh, wait a minute, HOT TUB Hear the sound of running very fast…hang on, I’m coming!
I know this will sound weird, but the temp here New Year’s Day could be anywhere from mid 40sF to mid 70sF. Depends on whether we get one of those “cold fronts” coming in from this big ol’ country just north of the USA.
The hot tub is clothing optional, but you might want to pack a robe for when you get out if it.
I now feel obliged to point out that taking the BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) also means not having to drive across the bridge, not having to stay sober (or drive drunk) and ESPECIALLY not having to park. In San Francisco, on New Year’s Eve, this is a definite luxury. Sorry for the localspeak in my previous post. Carry on.
P.S. Although I may cancel my plans and butt in on Canadiangirl’s dinner…lobster, wine and Oysters Rockefeller!!! Where do I sign up? And to complete this hijack, do you have a recipe for Oysters Rockefeller? Gimme have it!
Hal and I will be heading up to my parent’s cabin in the Poconos. Their place is in a gated community and every year (except last year…grrr) the development hosts a NYE party. They supply the noisemakers, DJ, and a heated building. We supply the food and adult beverages. The most fun I have ever had for $10!
And the best part is no worrying about who will stay sober enough to drive. Their cabin is only 2 blocks from the “clubhouse” and it’s all dirt roads. So, we don’t have to worry about hitting anyone or anything (other than deer).
My wife will be working a flight that goes to Des Moines, Iowa. It gets there in the early afternoon and leaves out early the next morning. We figure there won’t be many people flying from Memphis to Des Moines, so I will go along (free, of course). The early morning flight means that we won’t be out partying at midnight, but we plan to go to a damn nice steakhouse for dinner.
fruitbat and I will be going to a production of “A Christmas Carol” at Ford’s Theatre in DC. The play starts at 7:30, so we’ll probably have an early or late dinner at a Vietnamese or Indian restaurant in the neighborhood.
