If this is IMHO material then I suppose a mod will be along to move it eventually but since it involves food and possibly recipes I thought I’d put it here.
My husband and I like to cook and we decided a while ago that we didn’t want turkey for Thanksgiving dinner. We’re not big fans of ham either so we decided to have either duck or goose. Duck ended up the winner for economic reasons so, here’s what’s on the menu for Thanksgiving at my place:
Roast Duckling with Cherry and Black Peppercorn Glaze
Baby Artichokes sauteed in butter and white wine
Ciabatta stuffing with pancetta and chestnuts
Jelly style cranberry sauce straight from the can (I know  , but for some absurd reason it’s what we all prefer, go figure)
Corn Souffle
That menu seems a little lite on the green food. I may have to add another vegetable to balance out all of those starches but then again, there are only four of us, how much food do we really need?
My daughter claims that she’s making a pie from scratch for dessert. We’ll see if that comes to fruition. I don’t even know what kind of pie she’s considering. If she doesn’t come through that I think I’m going to make an apple tart with apricot glaze that I saw on Sara Moulton’s show on the Food Network. It looked quite easy though I may have to purchase a tart pan.
We’ve purchased a wonderful bottle of red wine to go with dinner (and if I could remember what it is I’d tell you) and we’ll probably have champagne and sparkling cider as an apertif (mom doesn’t drink).
So…what’s for dinner dopers? Anyone care to share?
I’m having Thanksgiving myself this year (four whole days off! Finally!) so my menu’s gonna be creative.
First, I’m gonna make my favorite artichoke dip and I don’t have to share. Bwahhahaha.
Then I’m thinking veggie loaf and roasted brussel sprouts from Whole Foods.
And I’m gonna buy several of those amazing looking deserts I always want to buy but can’t justify spending the money on. Things like fancy candies apples, chocolate mouse, fruit tartlet.
Turkey (oven roasted)
Roasted Garlic Mashed Potatoes
Stuffing (with onion, celery, and apples)
Green Beans with apples and onions
Jellied Cranberry Sauce from the can
Pumpkin Pie (store bought… because I don’t feel like making it ;))
Some other sort of pie
I also got some Ale for the feast, though others may be drinking some apple cider or soda.
Very Boring; we are having Roast Turkey, Smoke Turkey on the grill, Stuffing, mashed potatoes, homemade Cranberry sauce, applesauce, Sweet Potatoes, Green Beans and Salad. Home made Cheesecake & Apple pies for desert.
We will only have 17 this year as none of my wife’s family can make it. My BIL & FIL are still recovering from Katrina.
Whatever I can scrounge. Mom is either going to be in the hospital or will be just coming home that day. She won’t feel like eating much and I would never bother to cook for myself. I’d take her some where special, but she won’t be up to it, so it is just some kind of sandwich for me.
I’m having anywhere from 15 to 18 people here for Thanksgiving this year. I won’t know the exact total till later this evening. I’m not having anything special…just the usual fare:
Roasted turkey (Actually, there will be 2 turkeys. One brined and one unbrined.)
Roasted garlic mashed potatoes
Green bean casserole (Just a small batch for me, as I’m the ONLY one that likes it!)
Corn (Fancied up a bit.)
Creamed peas with pearl onions
Homemade rolls
Dressing
Homemade macaroni & cheese
Turkey gravy
Deviled eggs
Homemade noodles
Spinach salad
Pumpkin pie
Apple pie
Cheesecake (Pumpkin and plain)
Poke cake
3 gallons of ‘Angel Tits’ (Which I will start drinking as soon as I wake up early Thursday morning, and will continue drinking throughout the day. Even whilst cooking. Makes for an interesting day! Too bad everyone loves the stuff. I hate to share something THAT good!)
I love to cook and I make as many things as I can, myself. Home cookin’ is the best! None of that ‘store bought’ stuff…especially for Thanksgiving!
Thursday, we’re having turkey with wild rice stufifng, yukon gold mashed potatoes, green bean casserole, homemade cranberry relish, rolls, and whatever the hell my brother is bringing. Dad’s girlfriend may be making another veggie dish as well.
For dessert, we are bringing banana bread and pumpkin bread. If my brother wants pie, he’ll have to bring it himself!
Friday, I’m bringing green bean casserole and the two above dessert breads (as well as any leftover relish). I don’t know what else my MIL and FIL are serving or what SIL is bringing.
LMAO
Ok…Angel Tits is a concoction that my great aunt, a lush, came up with. Name and all. Here it is:
For each ‘batch’, you’ll need:
1/2 gallon + 1/4 gallon Vanilla ice cream - a good brand. None of that generic stuff.
1 - 2 liter bottle of Sprite
1 quart Sloe Gin
1 quart Cherry Vodka
Let the ice cream get really soft, then place it into a LARGE bowl (I’ve found that a nice, new, VERY CLEAN, 5 gallon bucket works GREAT for this part!), and add all the ingredients SLOWLY, stirring and mixing it together very well. Let the foam subside a bit, then pour into clean, gallon jugs. Place in the fridge till needed. Shake well before serving. Pour into pretty glasses and enjoy!
I always make at least 3 gallons of the stuff, as people have come to expect it at my house. I only make it for the Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year holidays, though!
Oh yeah. It’s some tasty stuff! I’ve got to make mine tomorrow, too. It’ll keep for 3 days in the fridge, but it NEVER lasts that long, no matter how much you make!
Me, the SO, and my brother. Three of our guests appear to have dropped out and so I decided to fish for anyone in my division at work who needs somewhere to go for dinner. No takers so far.
Our menu:
cornish hens, injected and basted with garlic and herb seasoning.
mashed potatoes
homemade macaroni & cheese (my contribution - I use a combination of Colby Jack, Pepper Jack, Habañero Chedder, and New York Extra Sharp Cheddar)
steamed fresh broccoli with cheese
pumpkin pie
pecan pie
pecan…um…I’m not really sure right now. Some sort of European thing that’s almost but not entirely unlike pie.
Yum. I wish I’d thought of that. Went to Whole Foods last night and finalized my plan. (I’m really excited, even tho’ it’s just me, this is the first meal I’ve planned out)
Artichoke Dip
Harvest Roast (a kinda of veggie loaf)
Potato Latke
Steamed Kale with Garlic
Wild Rice Blend
And for dessert:
Gigantic toffee/chocolate caramel apple
Tres Leches Cake
I went to a family wedding on the 20th. I decided not to drive across Wisconsin again so will be having a solo meal. Duck, mashed potatoes (a/k/a gravy substrate), stuffing, salad and pumpkin cheesecake for dessert.
