In this thread, MizQuirk is unfamiliar with the expression “desert island album.” To folks of a certain age, it’s a standard category – what are the albums you’d take with you if you were going to be stuck on a desert island with only ten albums to listen to? The concept may be going the way of the dodo, what with mp3’s and Ipods, but I find it a way of taking my own musical pulse.
Ground rules – no compilation albums or “best of/greatest hits.”
My list:
[ul]
[li]Exile in Guyville – Liz Phair[/li][li]Exile on Main Street – the Stones[/li][li]A Foreign Sound – Caetano Veloso[/li][li]Love Devotion Surrender – Carlos Santana and John McLaughlin[/li][li]Mad Dogs and Englishmen – Joe Cocker[/li][li]Pirate’s Choice – Orchestra Baobab[/li][li]Poetic Champions Compose – Van Morrison[/li][li]What’s Going On – Marvin Gaye[/li][/ul]
The other two I’d have to pick on the morning I left.
Twickster
Did I blow it with my soundtrack albums? Sorry! They just flow so well!
I also love your Allman Bros and Marvin Gaye choices–still have them on vinyl.
So I could replace my soundtrack choices with those.
Frank Zappa, The Best Band You Never Heard In Your Life, Roxy & Elsewhere King Crimson, Lark’s Tongue in Aspic Beatles, White Album Mike Keneally & Beer for Dolphins, Dancing Mike Oldfield, Ommadawn Genesis, Foxtrot Dave Brubeck Quartet, Take Five Pink Floyd, Wish You Were Here Roger Glover, Elements
Frank Zappa: One Size Fits All The Roches: The Roches They Might Be Giants: Flood King Crimson: Starless And Bible Black Crowded House: Temple of Low Men Jane Siberry: No Borders Here Steely Dan: Two Against Nature (yeah, I had to look twice at that one myself!) Thomas Dolby: The Flat Earth The Pixies: Trompe Le Monde
(Kilvert’s, you’re a man after my own heart. Or woman, as the case may be.)
“Man”, and thank you. I’m still bummed my daughter wouldn’t take 20 bucks to name our dog “Evelyn”.
“Starless…” and “Lark’s…” are probably a toss-up for me, but I can attribute most of my hearing loss to the last three minutes of Fracture, so I figured “Lark’s…” was safer. “One Size Fits All” and "Roxy are likewise toss-ups.

When I first read this thread title, I thought you were doing a takeoff, twickster. Only when I did some research, did I see that neither WRTI or WHYY broadcast the program that I’ve come to know. Those in central PA who listen to WITF-FM are familiar with Ellen Hughes and her program “Desert Island Discs” which can be heard every Saturday and Sunday. 89.5 once you get west of Morgantown.
English Settlement – XTC
Abbey Road – The Beatles
Surfer Rosa – Pixies
Spilt Milk – Jellyfish
Dusk – The The
Discipline – King Crimson
The Big Express – XTC
Repercussion – The dB’s
All Things Must Pass – George Harrison (if double LPs don’t count, then just Disc 1)
Talking Heads: '77 – Talking Heads
Nope – never heard of the program. It’s a concept that I first heard, oh, 30 years or so ago – and, as I said, it’s interesting to write down the ten from time to time. For instance, Exile on Main Street has been ont he list for, oh, 30 years or so.
The Beatles, Abbey Road
Phish, A Live One
Neutral Milk Hotel, In The Aeroplane Over the Sea
The Apples in Stereo, Tone Soul Evolution
The Old 97s, Satellite Rides
Ani Difranco, Living in Clip
They Might Be Giants, Flood
Wilco, Being There (tough to pick one there)
The Fiery Furnaces, Blueberry Boat
DJ Shadow, Endtroducing…
Notes:
–Yes, I cheated by including two double live albums, one double studio album, and one studio album with a bonus live disc. It’s my island. Piss off.
–Blueberry Boat is not something I’d ordinarily have on this list, but it is such a complex album that every time I listen to it I hear new things. Thus, this is my way of always having something new to listen to.
–I’m sure that tomorrow night I would have a completely different list.
Got some good islands going here, especially twickster’s and Kilvert’s Pagan’s.
Pour moi (no particular order):
