I find it interesting that the location had an influence on my selection, the thought occured to me that some albums wouldn’t be suited listening to outdoors on an island. Maybe I’m taking the question too literally though.
Ooh, let’s see…
In no order:
Elvis Costello- Blood and Chocolate
Tom Waits- Rain Dogs
Tom Waits- Alice
Tom Waits- Bone Machine
Harry Nilsson- a Little Touch of Schmilsson in the Night
Beatles- Sgt. Pepper
Beatles Revolver
Beatles- Rubber Soul
Pogues- If I Should Fall From Grace With God
Leonard Cohen- Various Positions
Lots of repeat artists, I know. If I had more, Zevon would be on the list.
Nope, sorry, no Greatest Hits albums (see the OP) – this should free up some room in your pants.
4thmonkey – I certainly didn’t necessarily intend the nature of the venue to be a factor – it’s just shorthand for “these ten and these ten only, nothing more and nothing less, because you’re out in the middle of nowhere.” Would “stuck in a cave somewhere” or “on the space station” yield different lists?
I find it interesting how many times the Beatles pop up – damn, I should have asked people to post their ages, though sometimes a generation can be inferred – and not the Stones.
And it’s fun checking out what are favorite albums for particular groups – is anyone else going “great group, but WTF on that being their best album”?
Since you’ve put the question out, I’m old enough to know better but still young enough to trust.

Runners up: Bob Seger, Stevie Ray Vaughn and the Cars.
No best of albums!
in no order:
*Rain Dogs * - Tom Waits (because I’m listening to it now, haven’t listened to it in years, and it was the first Waits album that I waited to come out.)
Electric Ladyland - Hendrix ( my older brother got it for x-mas. Lying in bed and hearing this coming from downstairs. It awakened me to so many things.)
Sorry Ma, Forgot To Take Out The Trash - The Replacements (The band that gave me direction out of the 80’s. ( Why do so many people like Tim? I think it is their worst effort.))
Astral Weeks - Van Morrison
Bring the Family - John Hiatt
Clouds - Joni Mitchell (she has so many strong albums, but this is the one I always come back to .)
London Calling The Clash ( This is usually number one on my list.)
