I LOVE breakfast cereals of all stripes, from boring old-fart stuff (All-Bran, Wheat Chex) to “adult” stuff (Grape-nuts, Corn Flakes) to hippie granola stuff (Kashi, Mueslix) to kid stuff (Cap’n Crunch, Reese’s Peanut Butter Crunch). I’m not sure I’ve met a cereal I don’t like.
Am I nuts, or did Waffle-O’s cereal come with a little syrup packet?
I’ll eat hot cereal even in the summer, and I’m particularly fond of oatmeal and Cream of Wheat.
For cold cereal, I like (unfrosted) shredded wheat, either the regular or mini size, and Cheerios with blueberries. I keep a bag of frozen blueberries in the fridge freezer, and toss on about a quarter cup or so. They defrost almost instantly.
Can’t think of anymore. I rarely eat them except to munch out, but I do impulse buy cereal, goddamn the brightly lit well-advertised aisle all to hell in my grocery store!
I’m not a big cereal person, but Grape Nuts used to be my favorite. But the last decade or so has brought a change either to the cereal or to myself, and it no longer seems to stay crunchy for very long; I cannot abide soggy cereal, so…no cereal for me. =/
Frosted Mini Wheats.
Life.
even better, Cinnamon Life.
Though I adore granola, it’s too fattening to eat alone, every day. I sometimes buy a scoop from the bulk foods section of the store, there are half a dozen kinds, to sprinkle over oatmeal, yogurt, fruit, etc.
I would choose oatmeal over any cold cereal, though. I loved Maypo when I was a kid, but it doesn’t taste the same.
Crispix, or the store knockoff “Crispy Hexagons”
Bran flakes–don’t care who makes them, I just shovel them in because they are good for me
Oatmeal–no frou frou flavors except maybe maple and brown sugar
I also like shredded wheat but not enough to buy a whole box. Granola in all its incarnations is yummy, but usually has too much fat and sugar to contend in the breakfast sweepstakes.
Cold cereal must be sprinkled with a bit of brown sugar and doused with icy cold skim milk.
Man, a lot of you are paying a shitload of money for name-brand cereals that you can get much cheaper (and just as good, IMO) as a store brand. I can find most chex cereals, shredded wheat, cheerios, etc. in generic for example. Why pay $5 when you can pay $2.50?
For myself, I often buy storebrand or Malt-O-Meal…but Malt-O-Meal ALL have gluten in them, even the rice and corn based ones. The name brands often don’t, even if they’re not labeled gluten free (well, they may have some cross contamination from processing lines, but that small amount of gluten doesn’t seem to cause a problem) so the sprog gets Chex (which are really gluten free and labeled so, except of course for the Wheat Chex) or Rice Krispies, or Aldi’s brand of Apple Cinnamon O’s or Crispy Rice. She’s on a cinnamon kick at the moment, so she’s working her way through a box of Cinnamon Chex, which is pretty hard to find consistently around here.
My favorites, and I don’t care about brand, are the Cinnamon Toast Crunch or Froot Loop type varieties.
Ooh, I haven’t had Golden Grahams in a long time, but I love those, too!
