What are your favorite one-hit wonders? (gathering nominations for a possible poll)

What reason would that be in my case? Two of my five entries have been somehow disqualified?

Whoops, only one of yours has been disqualified. You seconded Hocus Pocus after it had already received a second.

You still have 1 submission left.
mmm

Removed Lou Monte. FoisGrasIsEvil has another selection available.

Midnight Oil noted.

ace, these have all been seconded except Funky Music.

You still have 3 to give.

The Swingers - Counting The Beat
Player One - Space Invaders
Propellerheads - History Repeating
Ray Parker Jr - Ghostbusters
Gnarls Barkley - Crazy

Well, then, in hopes of seeing the irony of two hit singles by the same artist in your poll of one-hit wonders, I will nominate “Pop Goes the World” by Men Without Hats (US #20). Someone please second this.

Or is this as a good enough reason for you to yank the inferior “Safety Dance” from the poll, then?

Though they had other hits in Europe, I have to mention one of my faves, Mouth and MacNeal “How Do You Do”

I’ll second Buffalo Stance!

Oh, I missed that one. Yeah, Men Without Hats can’t be a one-hit wonder. Both those songs were pretty big (and when I was growing up “Pop Goes the World” was actually the first song I associated with them, as I was of prime music-listening age [12] at the time and I even remember listening to a SIDplayer version of it on the Commodore 64.) That said, “Safety Dance” is clearly the better song. (So good, I even wound up buying Rhythm of Youth a few years back. It’s actually a very solid album with a lot of fun tunes on it if you’re into 80s synth pop. I’d give it 4 of 5 stars. I never got around to the "Pop Goes the World album, though.)

That’s one of my favorite whole-albums of not just MwoH, but of the whole 80s. It’s a gem of a theme/concept album (that was already becoming a forgotten art form by then) with really great momentum-holding tracks throughout. It may be pop heresy to suggest this, but I’d happily put it on my concept album shelf next to Ziggy Stardust and Thick as a Brick.

“Radar Love” - Golden Earing

Though I don’t think they would be considered a one hit wonder in Europe.

Golden Earring also had Twilight Zone.

Hmmm…I’ll have to check it out. I never liked the sound of “Pop Goes the World” (but did the obnoxiously early-80s-sounding "Safety Dance, " go figure), so my exploration of that era of Men Without Hats ended there. But I do like my 80s synth pop, so I’ll check it out. I’m just reading through a description of the album. Ian Anderson from Jethro Tull plays flute on a track on it?! That is out of left field for me!

Since I have one more, I will nominate Sir Mix-A-Lot: Baby Got Back

Ray Parker, Jr., also had a big hit with, “The Other Woman,” post-Ghostbusters.

Lobbying for seconds…

I used my five already, but if anyone’s looking for something to nominate, I just thought of “Brother Louie” by Stories. Great song.

Barry McGuire was also the lead singer for The New Christy Minstrels, who had several charted songs.

Diesel - Sausalito Summer Nights

Lots of airplay in the early 80’s, peaked at #25 on Billboard.

Sweet City Woman by the Stampeders

Great song, I seconded.
