Walkin’ Blues - Hot Tuna
The World Is a Ghetto - War
I have a personal history with the song and love it dearly. Ok, I tell the story:
I first heard the song on a Byrds compilation in the late 80s. I later learned about the original, its importance as a morale booster for the British people in WW II and also made the connection to Pink Floyd’s song “Vera Lynn” on “The Wall” I had known since the album came out, but never understood because I didn’t know “We’ll Meet Again” and its history.
Fast forward to the late 2000s, when I was on a vacation with my nine-pin bowling club (The Bowling Stones) in a club hotel in Ibiza. We were a club of ten German guys around forty, but there was even a bigger party at the same hotel consisting of around 15 nice ladies from age 30-70 from Liverpool. This party always sat at the same table for the evening entertainment shows, until one evening we were faster than them and took the table for ourselves. When they arrived and saw their table occupied, they gave us friendly scoldings and just took the table next to us. So we bonded and had some nice chats with the ladies, until they decided to leave the hotel to go visit a dance club in town. They invited us to join them, but for some reason (maybe we had something planned early in the next morning, I don’t remember) we friendly declined. So they said goodbye by singing “We’ll Meet Again”, and to their surprise (and the surprise of my club mates), I sang along and together we finished the whole song.
We had some more nice encounters in the next days and I fondly remember this kind of bonding between the nations by music.
