This is kind of the continuation/successor to that poll. This time, I’m asking what Studio Ghibli movies you like the most. It’s a multiple selection poll, so choose those you enjoy the most. My wife and I just saw the Secret World of Arriety and it got me thinking about all Ghilbi movies.
Note: I am including Nausicca, mainly because I think it is on the edge of being a Ghibli movie. Nothing before it is included, though.
I see that so far I’m the only person to vote for my two favorites: Pom Poko and Whisper of the Heart.
The moment at the end of Pom Poko where the tanuki show the humans exactly what they’ve lost by destroying Tama Hills … so beautiful and sad. I choke up every time I watch it.
(LOL … I just looked at what I posted to your previous thread. I said almost exactly the same thing … .)
Spirited Away is one of my all-time favorite movies, animated or otherwise. Ghibli has produced plenty of other great movies, but this one is just… auggh, I love it!
Incidentally, if you ever get the chance to go to the Ghibli Museum, DO IT. Except for the fact that it can get insanely crowded, it was one of the most magical experiences I’ve ever had in a museum
Oops, that first one was an oversight on my part. Someone gave me a split DVD of Pom Poko/My Neighbor Totoro which was fun to watch. I remember the sad environmental message that wasn’t too overbearing. And of course, both of those movies are the more “kidlike” of Ghibli movies, but I still think of the reactions of American parents when they get to the “tanuki using their testicles as a means of conveyance” part.
Why is Kiki’s Delivery Service rated so low? ARE YOU PEOPLE ALL MAD?!
Seriously, there’s a lot of great ones, but the flying scenes in Kiki’s are, with the possible exception of the Fleisher Superman and Disney’s Peter Pan, the best ever animated anywhere!
What surprises me is that Arrietty is doing so poorly: the only reason that I can think of is that most haven’t had a chance to see it. My advice: if you like other Studio Ghibli movies, try to see that: it’s really worth it!
I saw Princess Mononoke first, and it remains my favorite of the three I’ve seen (plus Howl’s and Spirited), possibly because it was the first, but also because it casts an environment/industrialist struggle in wonderful shades of gray.
