I have mixed feelings about r/amitheasshole. I love the concept and it is entertaining at times. But I think at least 75% is fake, and some of the responses are so stupid that it just irritates me to read them. I think I am better off mostly sticking to the cute puppy pics.[/quote]
I agree with that, there are a lot of fake or absurdly embellished stories. And some of the responses are just weird, like people telling a woman that she’s an asshole because she doesn’t want anything to do with her ex-husband’s daughter that he had while cheating on her. Some stories are dumb enough to be true though, like the couple who called their wedding ‘white tie’ and wanted to bully around their guests, but clearly had no idea what ‘white tie’ means (it’s for major formal events involving really rich people, presidents, kings, diplomates, and the like).
I also like r/whatisthisthing as a couple posters above me mentioned. Two other subreddits I like for identifying things are r/Symbology (for identifying symbols) and r/tipofmyjoystick (where people help each other remember the names of video games). There are also two subreddits for mysteries that I like: r/UnresolvedMysteries and r/nonmurdermysteries.
r/askscience r/askphysics and especially r/askhistorians are good reads and are heavily moderated so you get proper answers. r/educationalgifs is also excellent as is r/dataisbeautiful and r/mapporn. Also if you like legal advice subreddits check out r/bestoflegaladvice.
Also worth saying that r/GYM is such a friendly, supportive and positive community.
I occasionally follow the missing persons sub reddits. Sometimes locals post and give unique insight that the major media overlooks.
Anytime I see a missing persons case there’s usually a sub reddit discussing it.
I also follow some of the music theory and musician sub reddits.
I forgot to mention the random acts of kindness subs, particularly the random acts of pizza sub. It makes me happy and gives me some faith in humanity that people are willing to randomly be kind to strangers.
There’s also random acts of Amazon and the assistance sub and a bunch of random acts of ______ subs.
But I’ve also seen comments in random threads where someone will say they’re having a tough time and are trying to get something and someone will randomly offer to get it for them. I’ve seen this so many times in random places on Reddit that I’m heartened that there are good people out there.
Of course there are scammers, but people wanting to help people wins out.
