Mine are r/aww (cute animals) and r/mildlyinteresting (random weird stuff but not to weird just… mildly interesting) and r/earthporn (cool nature photos). How about yours?
r/beyondthebump and r/oneanddone, both parenting subs. I like to comfort new parents going through those first few hellish weeks and also feel better about my situation because I have a really easy baby.
I like to dip my toes into r/menwritingwomen (a sub that mocks male authors badly writing women) and r/selfawarewolves (a sub that mocks people who don’t realize they’re making the opposition’s point for them.) I used to subscribe to r/menwritingwomen because of the witty comments, but it kind of devolved into mocking men’s sexuality (this male POV character noticed her boobs! omg!) which made me uncomfortable. It’s supposed to draw attention to men writing female characters badly, for example one of the best posts was about a woman who kept a little handgun inside her vagina.
The problem with reddit subs is they get repetitive fast. For example r/HumansBeingBros is like 80% animal rescue and it gets old after a while. You see the same stuff come up over and over.
I also like r/mildlyinteresting.
The main ones are:
r/sailing, r/bicycling, r/skiing, r/idiotsincars, r/justrolledintotheshop, r/politicalhumor, r/politics, r/natureisfuckinglit, r/amg, r/space…
Don’t forget about r/sdmb/ -A subreddit for people on the Straight Dope Message Board or those interested in it. It actually doesn’t have much activity on it. The last post was 4 months ago and the one before that was 6 years ago.
My favorite subreddits are r/AskReddit, r/AmItheAsshole, r/NewHampshire, r/Grilling, r/Preppers, r/CampfireCooking and r/LegalAdvice among others.
I admit I am skeptical of some of the stories people post on Reddit. Some just seem to convenient to trigger a response.
99%, if I’m on reddit, it’s r/WhatIsThisThing, after that, other than a few random ones check once or twice and then forget about for a few weeks (r/ExplainLikeImFive), anything else is almost always whatever hobby I’m into at the moment (ie various 3D printing subs) or something I’m dealing with at work (3 PPP loan subs).
So many. What I love about Reddit is that there’s a sub for just about everything, and if there isn’t, you can easily make one in less than 5 minutes.
I have multireddits (in the old version) for the groups of subs that I like.
I like the food subs because there are pictures of the recipes. r/food is the big one. r/foodporn has nice pictures… I’m a vegan, so there’s r/vegan and r/veganfoodporn also. r/MealprepSunday has some great ideas with pictures and directions for weekly meal prep. For people on a budget, there’s r/EatCheapandHealthy and r/EatCheapandVegan.
When I want to see different sides to something, I check out r/changemyview or r/unpopularopinion. There’s also r/SubredditDrama to see what’s going on with the subs.
Then just for shooting the breeze or finding out what people are thinking, there’s r/casualconversation and r/askreddit. There’s also ask subs for historians, scientists, social scientists and for books and audio suggestions.
Then of course, there’s always the AMA (ak me anything) and TIL (things I learned).
That just scratches the surface of the cool subs on Reddit. In the past, I would sit and hit the random sub icon to find more interesting subs. I’ve found a lot of cool subs like that. I found r/fountainpens that way.
I also love r/WhatIsThisThing and a variety of cooking and baking channels.
Most of my time is spent in r/UKTVLAND, r/panelshows and subreddits associated with shows uploaded- primarily GBBO and Taskmaster.
I mostly just browse through r/popular to see what’s shakin’. I follow the r/Oregon and r/Portland subs for local news. My one really dedicated sub is r/WayOfTheBern though, it’s the only political space I can stand any more. I’ve been subscribed to that one since it started.
ETA: Forgot r/WitchesVsPatriarchy and r/LateStageCapitalism, get a lot of my memes from those!
I like r/TwoSentenceHorror.
r/AmITheAsshole is fun to read, though a decent number of the posts are pretty obviously fake. I like reading r/relationships and r/relationship_advice because they make me feel WAY better about my relationships.
Any subreddit with extreme and iron-fisted moderation policies. Those are the only decent ones in my experience. Everything else inevitably degenerates into a thinly veiled race to see who can post the funniest image (or the funniest single sentence) first.
Which is OK, I guess, it’s just not my jam as a human being.
r/LetsNotMeet. I recently had to change parks because of some unwanted attention, and it’s oddly comforting to be reminded that other people get bothered in public too.
r/natureismetal, r/baddesign, r/earthporn, r/mildlyinteresting, and r/dataisbeautiful.
Aside from that, various specific-game subs for my permanent gaming rotation.
I’m partial to r/VintageMenus. Old menus from various restaurants, special-occasion banquets, train dining cars, and airline menus; and nothing later than 1985. They’re interesting–who, nowadays, would guess that “chilled tomato juice” would be an appetizer, and that liver as an entree would show up so often? But even more entertaining are the comments, where today’s commenters try to figure out just what some of the menu items are, or why a bacon and tomato sandwich costs as much as a chicken sandwich.
r/raspberry_pi: All things Raspberry Pi
r/HFY: Humanity Fuck Yeah! User written fiction. Origin of the Jensenverse.
r/TodayILearned: Self explanatory.
I didn’t expect to see another fan of r/vintagemenus here but it’s a great group. I love the menus from the 50-80s. So much liver. And olives.
It wasn’t dinner on my parents’ table unless there was a relish tray of celery, radishes, pickles, and olives.
I like browsing r/thriftstorehauls to see the photos of cool things people have run across. r/namenerds is fun, to help think of a good middle name or pet name. I love perfume so r/fragrance is interesting to me. r/nextfuckinglevel usually has some interesting posts. r/awww and r/Havanese for the cuteness.
I have mixed feelings about r/amitheasshole. I love the concept and it is entertaining at times. But I think at least 75% is fake, and some of the responses are so stupid that it just irritates me to read them. I think I am better off mostly sticking to the cute puppy pics.
r/seaofthieves as that’s my favorite video game, and r/loseit and r/1200isplenty for inspiration. But then I browse the cooking ones so I’m at cross purposes with myself I guess.
R/Choosingbeggers is a bit like that. Better lately, though.
Other good, general interest subs are r/askculinary , r/artifactporn , r/instantregret.
